Auckland: €557 from Geneva with Air China, luggage included

Star Alliance member Air China is offering extremely cheap flights to Auckland, New Zealand. You can get there as cheap as €557 from Geneva. Flights from Paris, Stockholm and Copencost less than €700 as well. In all those fares, luggage and board service are included. The catch is that all these flights have a lengthy layover in Beijing, up to two days.

Travel between Europe and China is mostly operated by Air China’s A330 fleet. Enroute to Auckland you’ll board a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

Search & Book

You can book them using the displayed OTAs at skyscanner. Booking them on Air China’s website can see prices increase up to €250.

According to Air China’s fare rules, these fares are set to expire on May 31, 2019. The fare from Geneva is valid for travel dates between today and December 31, 2019. The minimum stay is one week, the maximum stay is one month.

All other fares include travel dates between October 1 and March 31, 2020. Blockouts occur from October 4 through October 19 and from December 12 through January 1,2020. As above, the minimum stay in New Zealand is one week with a maximum of one month.

Unfortunately, these fares cannot be found on Google Flights, so you’ll have to search for them yourself. Starting at Geneva, good prices are available for journeys starting early November, like:

  • November 4 – November 23
  • November 4 – November 19
  • November 7 – November 23

Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand with a population of approximately 1.5 million and a wide range of tourist attractions and activities for visitors. The city is also an excellent starting point to explore the rest of New Zealand. Auckland is connected to Southeast Asia and Asia pretty well, even non-stop flights to the USA are available. As of now, you’ll have to switch planes at least once when flying to New Zealand from Europe. But this may change since long-range flights are hitting new limits all the time

The Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Auckland is between March and May and September and November. These are the times when you’ll find comparatively few tourists and can enjoy sunny days and moderate temperatures.

From the airport to the city

A bus to the city centre runs every 10 minutes, and the journey will take you about 40 minutes and a ticket for a one-way trip costs approx. €7.50. A taxi can cost up to €60, while Uber or Zoomy (similar to Uber) will cost between €24 and €43.

Information & Tips for Beijing

China’s capital Beijing is full of historically and contemporary important buildings. Most of them concentrate arround Tian’anmen square – which is sorrounded by government buildings and the entrance to the Forbidden City, the palace that hosted China’s emperors for more than 500 years. Beijing itself is full of attraction that take weeks to discover, but the fun doesn’t end there. Just a 90-minute bus ride away is The Great Wall at Badaling, the best known section of the Great Wall of China.

The Best Time to Visit

Beijing is located in a continental climate zone and is known for its hot, humid summers and its harsh, cold winters. Therefore, the best times to visit are from late March through May and late August through November.

Please be aware that during the Chinese National holidays, usually two weeks after October 1st, the city is overcrowded with Chinese tourists and should be avoided.

From the airport to the city
Beijing Capital Airport, the second busiest worldwide, is very well-connected by public transport. It is served by a regular subway line and an express rail way to the edge of the city centre, which takes 20 Minutes and costs about €3 one way. Further, there are 18 bus lines to different parts of the city (costing €3-5). Of course, taxis are an option as well. A trip to the city centre costs around €12-15, but often take over an hour.

It is not possible to rent a car in China without a Chinese drivers licence.
