Search & Book

We do not know until when these tickets will be available. We were able to find availability during the following time periods:

  • June 2019
  • September to October 2019

All of these months are adequate time periods to take a trip to the national parks.

The minimum stay is six days or a Saturday night, and your stay may not exceed three months. Do not forget to apply for the eTA-Visa, which roughly costs €5.

You can book the flight starting at €321 at Skyscanner or for €360 onwards on AirCanada.com. At Air Canada’s website you can also book the fare that includes the luggage for €440, so an additional €80.

You’ll get the best price on flight search engines such as Skyscanner. We nevertheless recommend booking directly on the carriers’ sites, e.g. Air Canada, Lufthansa.

Info

This is a Star Alliance fare that does not include check-in luggage. Additionally, some other disadvantages may apply, especially when flying with United:

Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian

Lufthansa Group airlines call this fare Economy Light. You can select your seats during the check-in process. While these airlines still allow Star-Alliance-Gold customers to bring one 23kg bag, it is said that this benefit will soon be eliminated without much warning.

United Airlines

The long-haul United Basic Economy allows Star-Alliance-Gold customers to fly with 2 x 23 kg luggage, or even 3 x 32 kg if you’re a MileagePlus frequent flyer. Nevertheless, there are other restrictions:

  • You cannot reserve your seats. Even at the time of check-in, you’ll be automatically assigned a seat, which you cannot change.
  • You’ll be the last one to board the plane (except if you’re a frequent flyer).
  • Additionally, if you’re a MileagePlus-customer:
    • No free Economy-Plus upgrades
    • Only 50% PQM instead of 100%, and only 0.5 PQS per flight
    • No modifications (e.g. Same Day-Changes) possible
    • Upgrades are not permitted
Air Canada

On flights with Air Canada, there is also a Basic Economy, but it is not quite as restrictive as United’s. If you have a Star-Alliance-Gold-Status, you can give up a 23 kg luggage, and Air-Canada-Altitude status holders can even be allowed up to 3 x 32 kg.

Other restrictions include:

  • You can reserve seats, but at a higher price than usual for Economy.
  • For Air Canada Altitude customers:
    • 25% miles for transatlantic flights, none for domestic.
    • Upgrades are not permitted.
    • From Prestige 25K onwards you can select your seats.

If you feel that these restrictions are unbearable, you should book over the airline’s website, such as Lufthansa.com, and select the rate that includes luggage for roughly €100 more.

Miles

The tickets are issued in booking-class K. The number of miles that you’ll get is low for most programs. For instance, at Miles&More you’ll only get 25% of the flown distance. If you apply for the executive bonus, you’ll at least get 50%.

At United MileagePlus you’ll get:

  • 25% for Canadian domestic flights
  • 50% for the Basic Economy long haul flights
  • 100% for long haul flights in Economy (€80 surcharge)

Other possibilities:

  • 5,428 Miles on Aegean Miles+Bonus

Trip to the Canadian national parks

Edmonton lies roughly four hours away from the town Jasper and that national park. While you’re there, you should probably also check out the Banff national park and the picturesque Icefields Parkway connecting both.

There are not many hotels and hostels inside the parks, and those are pretty expensive. You should expect to pay at least €150 per night unless you’re willing to drive to Calgary or e. g. Golden for the night.

You should also try to book the hotels as soon as possible, especially if you plan to go during the main holiday season. Try to look for fitting hotel-coupons as well.
