Finnair Mileage Run: Flights to Bangkok + Oneworld Sapphire + 90,000 Award Points Starting at €655

Finnair

A few days ago, we presented you a very interesting promotion from the frequent flyer program Finnair Plus. For one week, you will receive triple award and status points when booking flights that will take place by December 2022. Expressed as a percentage, this all sounds pretty abstract. Therefore, in this deal, we would like to show you once again how attractive the offer is in practice.

Using the example of an Eco-Flex ticket to Bangkok, you can get 90,000 bonus points for just €655 – and Oneworld Sapphire status with alliance-wide lounge access! Luggage is included and if your plans change, the ticket can at least be cancelled free of charge.

Below are the details of the flight deal itself, the miles you earn and the resulting status with Finnair Plus:

Flights to Bangkok

In principle, it doesn’t matter where you fly for miles and status. The Finnair Plus frequent flyer program is zone-based. Whether you fly to the USA, Singapore or Thailand makes no difference for the status and award points. The only important thing is that you choose the Flex fare in order to get enough miles.

However, Bangkok probably offers the best overall package. The cheapest tickets to Bangkok with other airlines currently cost around €450 (plus €80 for checked baggage). With Finnair, you’d pay (example from Paris) €433 for Economy Light, €513 for Economy Classic and €655 for Economy Flex.

The following departure airports seem to have the best prices for the Flex fare:

The flights have a stopover in Helsinki. The long-haul flight is operated with an Airbus A350, which offers about 79 cm seat pitch. A seat reservation is included in the Flex fare (unfortunately not including seats with more legroom).

You can find available dates using Google Flights (instructions). Simply add around €220 for the Flex fare to the prices displayed there.

You can only book until May 10, 2022, for trips until December 31, 2022, because the triple status and bonus points are only available during these periods.

Miles and Points

According to the points table, you earn miles for the flights as follows:

  • Europe – Helsinki: 3,000 points
  • Helsinki – Bangkok: 12,000 points
  • Bangkok – Helsinki: 12,000 points
  • Helsinki – Europe: 3,000 points

Makes a total of 30,000 points. However, as mentioned before, these are tripled, so you end up with a total of 90,000 status and award points.

With 90,000 points, you can do a lot. The highlights are probably long-haul one-way flights. A business class flight (one-way) from Europe to Bangkok or the USA normally costs 80,000 points and around €90. There is even a regular discount on it. However, keep in mind that points can be devalued at any time.

Warning

Before the pandemic, Finnair charged high fuel surcharges for award tickets. Although these have now (mostly?) been abolished, they can return at any time.

With One Flight to Oneworld Sapphire

With 80,000 points per year, you will reach Gold status at Finnair Plus. This is then valid until the end of the qualification period + one additional year. Ideally, that is almost 24 months!

Info

Unfortunately, it is currently not entirely clear whether you need to enter the Finnair Plus number when booking or not. If not, you could only create the account before the flight takes place and then enjoy almost 24 months of status validity. To be on the safe side, however, we recommend stating the number directly when booking – even if you may then be giving away 6 months of status validity.

You’ll have already got the 90,000 miles (as explained above) with a trip in Eco Flex. Thus, you get the gold status directly with the following advantages:

  • 15% points bonus for flights with Finnair and American
  • Free internet (60min on long-haul routes, 30min in Europe)
  • Free sports baggage on Finnair flights
  • One business class upgrade on long-haul routes or four upgrades on short-haul routes
  • Oneworld Sapphire status with the following benefits on all Oneworld flights:
    • Access to the business class lounge incl. 1 guest
    • Complimentary Preferred seats (with exceptions)
    • Priority on the waiting and standby list
    • Priority boarding
    • Free reservation of seats with extra legroom (depending on the airline)
    • Additional baggage allowance (with exceptions for light fares)
    • Priority baggage

With 150,000 points there is also platinum status with the following additional advantages:

  • 25% instead of 10% mileage bonus
  • Free drink in Finnair’s economy class
  • Free WiFi on long-haul routes (entire flight)
  • Two long-haul business class upgrades + 4 short-haul upgrades
  • Gold status to give away (!)
  • Oneworld Emerald status with the following benefits on all Oneworld flights:
    • Access to the first class lounge incl. guest (where available)
    • First class check-in
    • Fast track at security (sometimes also granted with Sapphire)

Another 60,000 points are easy to get with a ticket to the USA for around €420. So you’d already be platinum! Quite a no-brainer considering the benefits.

    It’s a great deal I just can’t bring myself to fly in Y for that distance… I don’t think!
