Guam: €697 Star Alliance Premium Eco One-Ways from Budapest (Business at €1,286)

Lufthansa Boeing 747 HAM Premium Eco

Star Alliance carriers Lufthansa and United Airlines have a bevy of interesting fares from Budapest to Guam. While we already covered discounted roundtrips in both premium economy and business class, we now take a look at oneway tickets. These are available at HUF 256,600 (~€651) in premium economy and for HUF 473,300 (~€1,202) in business class. While the roundtrips have higher value, booking a oneway ticket gives you the chance to leave Guam with United’s Island Hopper to Hawaii.

Our availability calendar highlights all possible flight dates at the lowest price. It will forward you to Lufthansa with your selected flight dates.

There are roundtrips available in both travel classes for just 50% more: Premium Economy at €1,033 and Business Class for €1,884.

Most connections will take you from Budapest to Munich first in Lufthansa’s economy class. Then you will board Lufthansa’s excellent Airbus A350 premium economy, with a spacious 2-3-2 seating pattern instead of the industry standard 2-4-2 in that travel class. A United Airlines Boeing 737 takes you from Osaka to Guam. You can also fly Swiss via Zurich and Tokyo.

The fare rules give no sales or travel period for this deal. You can find some scattered availabilities until October 2023. Onwards, you will find multiple flights at the lowest fare each week.

Google Flights will help you find additional flight dates. We recommend booking this fare directly with Lufthansa.

Why is booking with an airline better than with an online travel agency?

More often than not, online travel agencies offer lower fares than airlines do. We still recommend booking with the airlines directly. There are two main reasons for that:

Better Customer Service
In case any problems like delays, cancellations or missed connections arise, you can communicate directly with the airline. The airline has to take care of you because you have a contract with them.

If a travel agency issues your ticket, you may have to reach out to them first. You also depend on your OTA to forward information like flight changes instead of receiving them directly from the airline. In many cases, you may get a prime exhibition of responsibility shifting rather than problem-solving.

This especially applies to premium tickets. You don’t want to spend more than €1,000 to wind up with some budget OTA’s telephone hotline in case anything goes wrong.

Baggage and Other Fees
Economy fares not including hold luggage are industry standard by now. In most cases, travel agencies charge much higher baggage fees than the airlines themselves. If bags are not included in your fare, airlines are often the cheaper alternative.

This also applies to other things like food services, insurances or priority treatment. In almost all cases, you pay less for additional amenities when booking on the airlines’ website.

Adding a Stopover in Tokyo

You can add a stopover and spend a couple of days in Tokyo for HUF 30,000 (~€76) more.

Tack on United’s Island Hopper with Miles

This island hopper is a single flight from United Airlines, operated by a Boeing 737. It owes its nickname to the fact that it stops on several Polynesian islands between Hawaii and Guam. Usually, United Airlines charges roughly $1,000 to take the Island Hopper from Guam all the way to Hawaii. It gets a lot cheaper if you book it with miles:

  • United Mileage Plus charges 27,500 Miles + $20 taxes and surcharges.
  • Lufthansa Miles & More chargers 20,000 Miles + $183 taxes and surcharges.

Sadly, availabilities are very sparse for cheap reward tickets on this route. If you want to take the oneway to Guam to fly the Island Hopper, we recommend making sure prices for the Polynesian part of the journey are sensible before booking the long haul.
