Star Alliance member TAP Air Portugal is currently selling business class flights from New York City to Madeira starting at US$1,618 (~€1,511). The fare includes two checked bags, weighing 32 kilograms or 70 pounds.

Our availability calendar highlights all possible flight dates at the lowest price for trips up to 28 days. It will forward you to Momondo with your selected flight dates. There, you can choose TAP’s US website or OTAs. We also added TAP’s European site as a redirecting option, however, many Porto layovers are not available when booking this way.

You would fly TAP’s Airbus A321LRs, which have a lie-flat seat between New York and either Lisbon or Porto. On the Madeira flight, you would fly an Airbus A320 family aircraft with Eurobusiness (middle seat blocked). On some Lisbon-Madeira flights, you can find an A321LR.

Not too long ago, TAP’s Executive Class was infamously subpar. By now, however, all planes have been equipped with new seats that can be converted into fully flat beds and offer quite a high comfort. The service is also said to be very friendly.

Search & Book

According to the fare rules, this fare will expire on May 31, 2023. There is a minimum stay of 5 nights or a Saturday night and a maximum stay of 1 month. TAP allows one free stopover so that you can combine your trip to Madeira with a trip to the mainland.

You can use our calendar above that will show you availabilities. Once you selected your dates, it will forward you to either TAP’s Irish website or to Momondo with your preselected flight dates. Unfortunately, TAP’s website only shows some itineraries, when visiting from another site, like Momondo. You can also search more specifically on Google Flights (instructions) for example by setting filters. You can then use our Go2 browser extension to book your flights.

Adding a Portugal Stopover

TAP has been offering its Portugal Stopover service for a long time. The airline allows you to visit Porto or Lisbon for free – now for up to 10 days. They even offer activities or services at a discount in the two cities. You have two options to book your stopover.

By far, the easiest option to book a stopover is to use TAP’s website and follow these three simple steps.

Time needed: 2 minutes

  1. Select “Add a TAP Stopover Halfway” in the search box

When looking for flights on TAP’s website, click on the “Add a TAP Stopover halfway” button after filling in you route (you don’t have to add the dates, as you’d have to select them again in the next step anyways).tap stopover step 1

  2. Fill in the Stopover Details

A pop-up will show up asking you for details about your stopover. Select the travel dates, the city, the direction and the number of nights you want to spend in Portugal. If you’re adding the stopover on your outbound flight, make sure you respect the original flight’s minimum stay requirements.

  3. Select the flights

TAP will then forward you to the booking page, where it already shows the flights preselected with prices displayed, avoiding the annoying multi-city lottery game that many airlines still use. You can set filters, such as the one which will show you flights in Executive Class. By clicking on the “Book these flights” button, you can finish your booking.tap stopover step 3

On Go2

You can also add the stopover using our Go2 search box. Select a return flight pair and add a trip in the middle, while respecting the minimum stay requirements and the max 10 days in Portugal restriction. Then, it will forward you to either the Travel-Dealz.com flight search or to TAP’s website.

Information & Tips for Madeira

The island of Madeira is a autonomous region of Portugal. It is located roughly 1,000 kilometers off the coast of Portugal and 400 km north of the Canary Islands. The island’s capital Funchal is famous for its steep hills and streets, while the island is best known for the fortified wine namend after it. Madeira is a popular tourist destination thanks to its beautiful, volcanic landscapes and whale watching opportunities.

Best Time to Travel

Similiar to the Canary Islands, Madeira enjoys a mild climate all year round. Average temperatures never climb above 25 degrees or fall below 15 degrees. While November through February is more rainy than other times of the year, precipation is still much lower than on mainland Europe. If you want to go swimming, water temperatures are highest from May to September.

From the Airport to the City

Madeira’s Cristiano Ronaldo Int’l Airport is located in Funchal and served by a huge number of leisure airlines from all over Europe. An hourly bus service connects the airport to the city of Funchal, charging €8 for a roundtrip. A taxi will take 20-30 minutes and charge you around €20. Of course, there are several rental car offices at the airport.
