Kona, Hawaii: $1,135 Nonstop Domestic First Class Flights from California

United Domestic First Class © United Airlines, Inc.

Star Alliance member United Airlines put a nicer-than-usual price tag for business class flights from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Kona in Hawaii starting at €1,033 (~US$1,112). While most of the departures are on narrowbodies – therefore feature recliner domestic first class, some flights see a Boeing 777 with a lie-flat seat. Although, it’s the 777 with the 2-4-2 configuration.

Hint

Most of our links will forward you to United Airlines. To get this redirect to work, you need to visit united.com at least once before. You would also need to change the currency to USD, as our links generally take you to the Irish site.

Our availability calendar highlights all possible flight dates at the lowest price for trips up to 28 days. It will forward you to United with your selected flight dates. You can also check out Momondo as they originally state the prices in US dollars without the need to change it.

From Los Angeles and for some SFO flights, you would either fly a Boeing 737 MAX 9 or a Boeing 757, both of which feature domestic first class recliner seats with 2-2 configuration. We have a review of Domestic First on our German site.

From June, UA 1721 will predominantly feature Boeing 777 planes. While these feature lie-flat seats, the 2-4-2 configuration may scare some people away. You can read reviews of this product from Simple Flying, The Points Guy or World Traveller 73.

According to the fare rules, this fare will expire on [expireday]. You must book 21 days before departure and start your trip by June 15, 2023. There is no minimum stay or maximum stay. There is also another parallel sale, which is valid until May 4, 2023, for trips in August and September.

You can use our calendar above that will show you availabilities. Once you select your dates, it will forward you to either United’s website or Momondo with your preselected flight dates. In this case, we don’t recommend booking through online travel agencies (OTAs). You can also search more specifically on Google Flights (instructions) for example by setting filters. You can then use our Go2 browser extension to book your flights.

Why is booking with an airline better than with an online travel agency?

More often than not, online travel agencies offer lower fares than airlines do. We still recommend booking with the airlines directly. There are two main reasons for that:

Better Customer Service
In case any problems like delays, cancellations or missed connections arise, you can communicate directly with the airline. The airline has to take care of you because you have a contract with them.

If a travel agency issues your ticket, you may have to reach out to them first. You also depend on your OTA to forward information like flight changes instead of receiving them directly from the airline. In many cases, you may get a prime exhibition of responsibility shifting rather than problem-solving.

This especially applies to premium tickets. You don’t want to spend more than €1,000 to wind up with some budget OTA’s telephone hotline in case anything goes wrong.

Baggage and Other Fees
Economy fares not including hold luggage are industry standard by now. In most cases, travel agencies charge much higher baggage fees than the airlines themselves. If bags are not included in your fare, airlines are often the cheaper alternative.

This also applies to other things like food services, insurances or priority treatment. In almost all cases, you pay less for additional amenities when booking on the airlines’ website.
