Oman Air To Join Oneworld Alliance in 2024

Oman’s national carrier Oman Air has a pretty good reputation among the globally acclaimed airlines from the Persian Gulf. Their onboard product can hold up with industry heavyweights Emirates and Qatar Airways. Despite offering decent fares in the past and present, booking Oman Air always came with a major downside: Gathering miles was rather uninteresting, since the airline was not part of a major alliance. But that is about to change.

Oneworld alliance announced on their website that the carrier is about to join the global airline network. Oman Air joins existing members American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, Qatar Airways, Qantas, Royal Jordanian, Royal Air Maroc, SriLankan, Malaysian Airlines and JAL. The aim is to complete the airlines’ integration by 2024.

With the new member, Oneworld tightens its grip in the Middle Eastern market, as Oman Air is the third member of the alliance based on the Arabian peninsula (alongside Royal Jordanian and Qatar Airways).

From their base in Oman’s capital Muscat, the carrier offer short- and long haul services to the Arabic peninsula, Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe. Their long-haul fleet consists of 9 Boeing 787 and 10 Airbus A330. Boeing 737NG and MAX aircraft are the backbone of their short haul fleet. In contrast to most Arabic airlines, Oman Air serves alcoholic beverages on international long-haul flights.

Changes for Oneworld Frequent Flyers

For European Oneworld frequent flyers, Oman Air will represent another option to gain or redeem miles on Europe-to-Asia flights, among other things to get excited about:

  • Oneworld Sapphire and Emerald tier holders gain access to three new lounges in Bangkok, Muscat and Salalah.
  • Tier holders of Oman Air Sindbad will gain access to lounges and other perks on Oneworld long-haul flights.
  • A new bunch of British Airways Executive Club Mileage Runs. Every flight of 2,000 miles or more brings 140 tier points.
  • A Status Match to Oman Air Sindbad is currently possible and gets more attractive by this announcement. But it could also mean that it is about to end soon.

We will keep you updated on future developments.
