The Finnish railway VR currently has a great offer during the summer holidays (until August 31, 2025). You can purchase a train ticket with unlimited train rides in Eko Class for the duration of 7, 9, 14, or 30 days. Discounts are available for children, students, and seniors.
The following prices apply depending on the selected period (prices per person):
- 7 days: €144 (€21 per day)
- 9 days: €165 (€18 per day)
- 14 days: €217 (€15,50 per day)
- 30 days: €362 (€12 per day)
The following discounts are available if you meet the criteria:
- Students: -30%
- Pensioners: -20%
- Children (under 18 years): -50%
Terms and Conditions
The ticket must be purchased through the VR Matkalla app (App Store; Google Play).
The ticket is non-transferable and can only be purchased for yourself. It is valid for all long-distance train journeys within Finland, as well as on VR commuter trains. You can only reserve one journey for the same date and time. Since all trips must be reserved in advance through the app, you cannot simply board the train and travel. But you can reserve an unlimited amount of trips.
The ticket cannot be used for HSL commuter train journeys (Y, X, U, L, E, A, P, I and K trains).
The following extras are not included, and you will need to pay an extra fee:
- Seats in Ekstra Class or the Upper Deck of the restaurant car
- Travelling with a pet or a bicycle
- Sleeping cabins on night trains
How to Book Your Holiday Ticket
First, you need to download the VR Matkalla app for iPhone or Android. In the app, you have to create an account. This can all be done in English. However, the first time you log in and start the app, everything is in Finnish. You can change the language settings as follows:
Now you can buy a holiday ticket in the above-mentioned configurations via Buy -> Holiday Ticket. You can then pay with a credit card.
Conclusion
If you’re planning to travel around Finland this summer, this ticket can be very worthwhile. Especially compared to Interrail, you can save a lot of money here. As a comparison, an Interrail ticket for 4 travel days within a calendar month would cost at least €212.
