ship details nieuw statendam 10 24 17 large c034

In mid-November, the Nieuw Statendam from Holland America Line will embark on a two-week transatlantic cruise. The departure is from the port of Civitavecchia, which is about an hour away from Rome. In America, you’ll arrive in Fort Lauderdale. Currently, this cruise is available in an interior cabin starting at an affordable price of €844 per person. The ocean-view cabin, however, seems like the better choice, only costing €894 per person.

The mentioned prices include all meals in the main and buffet restaurants as well as the use of most onboard facilities.

Info

Holland America Line typically charges a gratuity of US$17 (~€15) per day and person to the onboard account. This amounts to approximately €240 (per person) extra for the 15-day journey from this deal. The amount can be adjusted upon request.

The Route

The cruise starts in Civitavecchia, a port located about 70 km from the Italian capital of Rome. After leaving the port, the ship heads to the Spanish harbours of Cartagena and Málaga. It then continues through the Strait of Gibraltar to Cadiz. This southern Spanish coastal city lies on the Atlantic and offers numerous sandy beaches.

After two days at sea, the Nieuw Statendam reaches the Azores, docking in the island capital of Ponta Delgada. This is also the last stop on your way to Florida. After 14 nights, the ship arrives in Fort Lauderdale in the state of Florida.

Here’s the detailed itinerary:

  • November 16: Civitavecchia (departs at 16:00)
  • November 17: At sea
  • November 18: Cartagena, Spain (8:00 – 18:00)
  • November 19: Málaga, Spain (8:00 – 18:00)
  • November 20: Cádiz, Spain (8:00 – 18:00)
  • November 21 – 22: At sea
  • November 23: Ponta Delgada on São Miguel (8:00 – 17:00)
  • November 24 – 29: At sea
  • November 30: Fort Lauderdale (arrives at 7:00)

The Ship

The Nieuw Statendam is the second ship of the Pinnacle Class from Holland America Line and was launched in 2018. It is almost identical to its sister ships Rotterdam and Koningsdam. It accommodates 2,150 passengers across 12 passenger decks.

The ship’s size (300 meters long and 35 meters wide) is adapted to the maximum size of the new Panama Canal locks and can travel up to 22 knots. However, the service speed is around 18 knots.

There are a total of 11 dining options, 4 of which are included. Water, tea, and coffee are free of charge, as is usual with American cruise lines. The recommended gratuity is $17 per night per person. Payments onboard are made using the cruise card in US dollars. The onboard language is English.

Holland America Line places great importance on a neat appearance for dining and events. The cruise line offers a classic cruise experience without many modern attractions. However, the food and service are excellent, and the decor is elegant.

Flights

Americans will need a flight to Europe to board the cruise in Italy, and Europeans will need a flight back home after the cruise. Either way, the flights are not included. Here’s a list of examples of how much you’d currently pay to cross the Atlantic on a plane, including luggage:
