A little over a month ago (on September 1), SAS Scandinavian Airlines switched from Star Alliance to SkyTeam. This brought significant changes not only for EuroBonus customers but also for e.g. Lufthansa passengers, who had to adjust accordingly.
However, one hope initially went unfulfilled. The SkyTeam rules usually stipulate that frequent flyers with Elite (Plus) status always receive additional free baggage. Unlike at Star Alliance, there are no numerous exceptions for Light fares. However, SAS had a different approach and made it clear as early as July: Those travelling on the Light fare are not allowed to check any baggage—regardless of whether they are status members or not.
Update April 22, 2025: SAS has once again changed their policies. As of April 2025, the free bag benefit is honored on the Go Light Fare for all EuroBonus and SkyTeam frequent flyers. More info can be found here.
Update March 31, 2025: There are now increasing reports that even non-SAS Elite passengers no longer receive free baggage on the Light fare. However, customer service and the chatbot continue to point out the rule mentioned below.
Now, there has been a slight turn of events. In Flyertalk, various customer service statements were discussed. The current situation is as follows:
- As a EuroBonus Silver member, there are no baggage benefits in the Go Light fare.
- As a EuroBonus Gold/Diamond frequent flyer, you get one large carry-on (if not already included) in the Go Light fare, but no free checked baggage.
- New: As a SkyTeam Elite (Plus) frequent flyer, you get one piece of checked baggage (up to 23 kg) for free in the Go Light fare. However, this does not apply to EuroBonus members but only to frequent flyers of other programs like Flying Blue, Delta SkyMiles, etc.
Unfortunately, this information cannot be found on the website. However, when asked via customer support, this was confirmed as such:

EuroBonus members are treated worse than other frequent flyers
If SAS enforces the rules as communicated, all EuroBonus status members will be treated worse than external frequent flyers from ITA, KLM, Korean Air, Delta, and others. This is unusual. Typically, an airline’s own frequent flyers enjoy better benefits (seat selection, more baggage, upgrades, etc.) than those of other airlines.
However, there is already one area where such discrimination against an airline’s own customers is happening: Lounge access in North America:
- Delta SkyMiles frequent flyers do not receive access to Delta lounges when travelling in economy class. However, frequent flyers of other programs still have access on international itineraries.
- United MileagePlus frequent flyers are not allowed in United Club Lounges on domestic flights. This restriction does not apply to other Star Alliance Gold members (like Lufthansa Senator, etc.).
- American Airlines does the same to its own AAdvantage members.
However, these exceptions are always outlined in the respective alliance’s rules. So far, this is not the case for free baggage in SkyTeam. Therefore, SAS’s actions remain in contradiction to SkyTeam’s benefits.

Conclusion
SAS is making a slight retreat from the initially announced strict baggage rules in the Light fare. However, the rules remain unsatisfactory. Now, “external” frequent flyers receive more benefits than loyal SAS customers.
It remains to be seen whether this will always be enforced in practice. On a recent departure from Germany, we were able to check in a bag for free as a EuroBonus Gold member on the Light fare, even though it was not fare-provided. However, this might have been different at a counter with SAS staff.
Incidentally, SAS promotes the absence of free baggage on its website as a great environmental protection measure. Less baggage means fewer emissions, after all. Cynics may suggest that Light fares are more about generating additional revenue through baggage fees.

I’ve EBG and booked two Go Light fares through OTAs. Can confirm I do get 2x extra bags and 1x carry-on as EBG after inputting EBG number in the booking.
Seat selection is disabled. However I was able to live chat an agent to have my seat selected, not an issue at all.
Just an update — SAS seems have updated their website and no longer mentioning “EB/ Skyteam EP do not have free baggage when flying Go Light”.
This update is along when other updates like replacing Go/Plus/Business with Economy/Premium/Business.
The rule seems to be clearer then? and perhaps even EB can bring a free bag with them? — haven’t tried so not sure
Yes, they had another policy change (this time a positive) one in April. We did a report about the change in April, but missed to include it in this post.
Thanks for the heads up. I’ve included another update and linked to https://travel-dealz.com/news/sas-light-baggage/
seems I was wrong…ughh. for some reason my seats were free indeed but when I did a ghost booking later on with my ff number, seats had become chargeable…SAS is sort of …weird. never paid seats on delta as a skyteam platinum or even gold member….
hello to all, it seems skyteam elite plus, afklm platinum, get free seats when traveling sas plus. I just booked a flight to malaga and all my seats were free of charge unlike back in October when I had to pay for my seats on the cdg cph nyc ✈️ flight.
The language is now sneaky. If the SAS ticket has no baggage allowance, then the weight of the allowed baggage for the baggage allowance is zero. Thus the additional baggage allowance for being an ElitePlus on SAS is an additional bag of zero kg. This is the same kind of sneaky approach that AeroMexico has been running with at times since even before SAS became part of SkyTeam. So then we are up to agent discretion on what they allow/waive.
As a matter of fact SAS is the worst airline for Elite plus members : no extra luggage allowance (unless you already paid for it in your fare, so this is no benefit), no discount on paid luggage (75 € full rate), no lounge access at departure airport outside Scandinavia, no exit row seat prebooking, no on flight service (only coffee and tea), very low level of SAS lounges in Scandinavia. SAS is a kind of low cost that is dreaming of being part of a world class alliance.
Got charged 75 euros for a bag ex-AMS on 21st Oct.
Here’s the full response I received from SAS:
Thank you for contacting SAS.
I have looked into your case regarding booking reference: XXXXXX.
We regret to inform that we can’t accept your request to refund the baggage, paid at the airport.
You had a SAS GO Light, that ticket has an exception to it, when you have SAS GO Light ticket then your benefits from the bonus program
you are using will not provide you with extra bagage for free. In this case you needed to pay for the baggage.
This is what the Skyteam official website say:
“One additional bag on top of bags included in ticket conditions (except ‘Go Light’ Tickets).
The weight of the extra bag mirrors the weight of the bag included in the booking class in case of ‘piece concept’. 20kg in case of ‘weight concept’.”

We look forward to welcoming you on board again when given the opportunity!
Flying today from TKU with SAS as a Skyteam E+ member of AF they charged me the hold luggage.
I have called last week the customer care line to confirm informations above they told me yes free check-in luggage for Skyteam E+ members not part of Eurobonus…
But seems that the rule as changed within the week and now it’s chargeable again 🙁 (agent as call the SAS hotline) in front of me and the guy at the lounge in ARN as confirmed to me that is still under discussion with a decision expected beg of 2025… but i can try to claim for a refund. SAS + Skyteam = 0
Do you get a large carry-on as a Non-Eurobonus Skyteam Elite member or only a large check-in suitcase?
Officially only the large check-in suitcase. But I can’t imagine the ground staff checking if the people entering the plane with SkyPriority are EuroBonus members or not.
