Miles&More: How To Convert Award Miles into Status Points to Reach Senator Status

Senator Backpack

If you’re just a few status points short of reaching Senator status at the end of the year, Miles&More offers several options. One of these is, of course, a mileage run to collect the necessary points in time.

However, if you’re not up for that, you can also convert existing award miles into status points. To do so, you’ll need to be a Frequent Traveller status member. This guide explains how it works and what else you should keep in mind.

Mile Conversion as an Extra Benefit for Frequent Travellers

The only option available for mile conversion is through the Extra Benefits. This advantage is unlocked once you’ve earned 800 qualifying points in a year, which equates to, e.g. four long-haul flights in business class.

Up to 20,000 award miles can be converted this way:

  • For 20,000 miles: 125 points + 125 qualifying points

The Miles&More website implies that this is the maximum value. So, it should also be possible to convert smaller amounts, though no specific example is given for this.

From 2,000 points in a year (1,000 of which must be qualifying points, i.e., from flights with Lufthansa, Swiss & Co), you will reach Senator status.

In the past, there was also a Select Benefit for Senators, which allowed the exchange of additional miles. However, this appears to have been discontinued with the changes to the Miles&More program in 2024.

Is the Mile Conversion Worth It?

Assuming a Miles&More mile is worth approximately 1 cent, a (qualifying) point costs effectively €1.60 when using the Extra Benefit.

This is an acceptable price, though not particularly cheap. In principle, qualifying points can be collected more cheaply through flights. A mileage run such as Athens – Tel Aviv could yield 480 qualifying points for €400 (0.83 CPM).

This might not be the most practical example, but 1.5 cents per qualifying point can also be achieved with less extreme flights. European flights with connections (from around 1.5 CPM) and Eurowings business class to Dubai (from around 1.5 CPM) are examples.

Thus, the main advantage of converting points is that you don’t have to board a plane. Toward the end of the year, this can often be the limiting factor.

Conclusion

If you’re only a few status points short of Senator status at the end of the year, mile conversion can be a practical solution. However, mile conversion isn’t particularly cheap.

    Hi
I still need 640 points to re qualify as senator. What would be the best option for me ? Take one Business class flight return ? Thanks

You mentioned there are other ways to achieve this change of status to Senator. What are those other options ?

Hi! Carlos – as we said in the article, a short mileage run can help you, too. For example. Polish domestic flights with LOT are cheap and grant you qualifying points at a decent value.

I found your post quite odd and confusing. I didn’t understand much about how I should do….
