Guam & Hawaii: €2,729 Japan Airlines Business Class from Frankfurt (Overnight Layovers, Japan Stopover Possible)

Oneworld member Japan Airlines is currently selling discounted tickets for its lauded business class, with flights from Frankfurt, Germany to US overseas territories Guam and Hawaii available for just €2,729. Travel to Hawaii requires layovers of 8 hours (outbound) and 18 hours (inbound) in Tokyo. When going to Guam, you spend at least 15 hours in Tokyo each way.

The fare gets even more interesting due to the fact that Japan stopovers are possible for only a little extra – when travelling to Hawaii.

Since the fare requires long layovers in Tokyo anyway, you might want to add a stopover. While prices to Hawaii remain roughly the same, flights to Guam get €500 more expensive:

  • Frankfurt – Honolulu | Honolulu – Nagoya | Tokyo – Frankfurt for €2,996
  • Frankfurt – Honolulu | Honolulu – Tokyo | Tokyo – Frankfurt for €3,002
  • Frankfurt – Tokyo | Tokyo – Guam | Guam – Frankfurt for €3,169

Our availability calendar highlights all possible flight dates at the lowest price for roundtrips up to 28 days. It will forward you to Skyscanner with your selected flight dates. There, you can check what online travel agencies have to offer, as they sell these tickets up to €100 cheaper than JAL on its website. You can also choose to be forwarded to Japan Airlines’ website, which we recommend.

All itineraries start with a flight from Frankfurt to Tokyo-Narita, operated by JAL’s Boeing 787 fleet. You will probably encounter the airlines’ Apex Suites in a 2-2-2 configuration. Thanks to narrow corridors, you can still expect direct aisle access from all seats.

Connecting flights to Guam (~4 hours) and Hawaii (~8 hours) are operated by Boeing 767 or 787. Both offer lie-flat seats in a 1-2-1 seating pattern. Travel to Hawaii requires layovers of 8 hours (outbound) and 18 hours (inbound) in Tokyo. When going to Guam, you spend at least 15 hours in Tokyo each way.

Visa Info

Most Europeans need an electronic system for travel authorization (ESTA) to enter the USA for up to 90 days. This costs US$21 (~€19) and you should apply for it a couple of days before your trip, at the latest.

There are some cases where you cannot apply for an ESTA, e.g. if you’ve been to Cuba since 2021 or to Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, or North Korea since March 2011. In those cases, you’ll need to get a visa from a US embassy or consulate, which can take multiple weeks.

Most European passport holders can spend up to 90 days in Japan visa-free.

Search & Book

According to the fare rules, these tickets are on sale without a sales period. Depending on your destination, you can find availabilities until July 2026.

Google Flights helps you find additional flight dates. Even though you can find cheaper tickets via Skyscanner’s online travel agencies, we recommend buying tickets directly from the airline.

Why is booking with an airline better than with an online travel agency?

More often than not, online travel agencies offer lower fares than airlines do. We still recommend booking with the airlines directly. There are two main reasons for that:

Better Customer Service
In case any problems like delays, cancellations or missed connections arise, you can communicate directly with the airline. The airline has to take care of you because you have a contract with them.

If a travel agency issues your ticket, you may have to reach out to them first. You also depend on your OTA to forward information like flight changes instead of receiving them directly from the airline. In many cases, you may get a prime exhibition of responsibility shifting rather than problem-solving.

This especially applies to premium tickets. You don’t want to spend more than €1,000 to wind up with some budget OTA’s telephone hotline in case anything goes wrong.

Baggage and Other Fees
Economy fares not including hold luggage are industry standard by now. In most cases, travel agencies charge much higher baggage fees than the airlines themselves. If bags are not included in your fare, airlines are often the cheaper alternative.

This also applies to other things like food services, insurances or priority treatment. In almost all cases, you pay less for additional amenities when booking on the airlines’ website.

Information & Tips for Honolulu

Honolulu, located on the island of Oahu, is known for attractions like Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head crater, and the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. The local currency is the US dollar (USD). Prices tend to be higher than the mainland US, especially for dining and accommodations, reflecting its popular tourist status. The weather is generally warm and tropical year-round, with mild seasonal variations and occasional rain showers.

Oahu’s transport infrastructure includes a public bus system that covers much of the island but can be slow due to traffic and frequent stops. Driving is the most common way to get around, though congestion is common in urban areas like Honolulu. There are no passenger trains, and intercity travel mostly relies on roads, making travel times dependent on traffic conditions.

Information & Tips for Guam

Guam, a U.S. territory in the western Pacific, is known for its beaches, WWII historical sites, and Chamorro culture. Popular spots include Tumon Bay for resorts and shopping, Two Lovers Point for coastal views, and War in the Pacific National Historical Park. The U.S. dollar is the official currency, and prices tend to be similar to mainland U.S. standards, sometimes higher due to import costs. The weather is tropical year-round, hot and humid with a rainy season from July to November, so lightweight clothing and rain protection are useful.

Guam has limited public transportation, with a small network of buses that are infrequent and mainly serve tourist areas like Tumon. Most residents and visitors rely on cars, and rental vehicles are widely used for getting around. There are no trains, and intercity travel is essentially just travel between villages, as the island is small—about a 1.5-hour drive end to end. Walking is feasible in some resort zones, but outside of that, infrastructure for pedestrians is minimal.

Information & Tips for Japan

Japan offers a blend of modern cities and natural beauty, with highlights including Tokyo’s bustling urban landscape, Kyoto’s historic temples, Mount Fuji, and the hot springs of Hakone. The currency is the Japanese yen (JPY), and credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas, though cash is still common in rural regions. Japan can be pricey, especially in cities, with high costs for accommodation and dining, but budget options are available. The weather varies by region: summers are hot and humid, while winters can be cold, particularly in the north. The best time to visit is typically during spring (for cherry blossoms) or autumn (for fall foliage).

Japan’s transport infrastructure is highly efficient and easy to navigate. In cities like Tokyo and Osaka, the metro and train systems are extensive, punctual, and relatively easy to use, though they can get crowded during peak hours. Buses and taxis are also available, but less convenient for tourists. For intercity travel, Japan’s Shinkansen (bullet trains) are fast, comfortable, and reliable, though more expensive than other options. Buses and domestic flights are also available for longer distances, but trains remain the preferred choice for many travellers due to speed and convenience.
