ATM Operator Fees in 80 Countries Worldwide

atm withdrawal

Thanks to the many credit cards that don’t charge withdrawal and foreign transaction fees, it is possible to withdraw cash at an ATM abroad completely free of charge with a credit card. It has become a trend, however, that the ATM operators in some countries charge an additional fee (as can be seen in the cover photo). This fee, that is not charged by your bank, usually costs around €1 – €5.

Over the last years, many Travel-Dealz readers have reported the fees that they’ve had to pay and gave hints as to where you can avoid these surcharges. Thanks to our readers, we now have information about over 50 countries. Feel free to help and leave your own experiences as a comment.

Example USA: $3 – $7 fee

Especially in the USA, one always has to pay $3 – $7 at the ATMs in the big cities (roughly €2.70 – €6.40). If you’re withdrawing small amounts, this could represent a surcharge of more than 10%.

$7 fee at an ATM in Houston, Texas

One can survive without cash (especially in the USA), but you’ll definitively need cash to buy a Hot Dog on the streets, or to buy a 7-day subway pass in New York, for example.

Your experience?

Maybe you’ve also already been angry about a foreign transaction fee? Then let us know where, in the comments, and how high it was!

Careful: Never use the ATM’s exchange rate

Some ATMs offer to charge you in your own currency instead of the local currency. In 99% of the cases, they’ll give you a much worse exchange rate than your own bank. This also applies to hotels, supermarkets, etc.

Kyrgyzstan – optima bank fee free up to 25000 som per withdrawal (screen will say 20000 som as a maximum but I could still pick 25000). Some ATMs also offered USD but never had any to withdraw

Tajikistan – Amonat bank fee free (forgot the maximum withdrawal amount but I was able to get at least 200usd equivalent in somoni in 1 withdrawal). Some ATMs also offered USD but never had any to withdraw

  9. Hannah says:

Thank you- this list was really helpful for me for a recent trip in the Balkans

    – can confirm MFBanka in Sarajevo (BiH) had no fee
    – all the ATMs I tried in Kosovo charged 5 euros
    – There were no fee-free ATMs in Montenegro
    – I was not able to find any fee-free ATM in North Macedonia

To note, there are LOADS of exchange places, particularly in Serbia and Tirana, Albania. If you are travelling from a region with Euros freely available, I would recommend bringing with you and exchanging as the rates were very close to the XE rate. Many places also accepted card, so cash is really for local food/markets/small shops.

Barclay in Germany: for 500 Euro 20 Euro fee at IngDiba machine.

  11. Milton says:

Hi team, this list was a life saver for my recent trip in Asia, but let me provide some extra details from my experiences:

Singapore: HSBC is free and minimum amount depends on available notes only. UOB is free too, but minimum of 200SGD.
Indonesia: Mandiri was the best… free, no minimum and no offering for their own conversion.
Vietnam: ACB Bank is free, but just for European Visa cards. TP Bank was free too, but did not mention anything about Visa, so a Mastercard might work as well. Shinhan Bank also free, no minimum and no offering for their own conversion… this was the only bank from my trials that was not mentioning fees in ATMs at the SGN airport.

  12. Elena says:

Helllo, I love your article, it’s really useful !
Wanted to add some infos for Thailand. It’s not an ATM but it’s worth it. There is a currency exchange in the airport that is called superrich and it was cheaper to get money there than from any ATM in the city. I usually never use any over the counter exchange as they rob you with the rate but this one is different.
I exchanged 600€ for 22.170 bahts yesterday. Exchange rate : 36.95. Interbank rate is currently 37. The difference was 54 bahts (so less than the usual 220 bahts)
    thank you !

  13. Yathran says:

I have a debit card from India, In Australia, ANZ Atm asked for AUD 2 for withdrawals and in Fiji, it was demanding FJD 15 similar to other banks. I tried both Visa and Mastercard. Not sure what is their criteria for free withdrawal.

  14. Bob says:

the TRUIST bank in US charges $3 – it’s not free, still better than most others that do $3.50 $4 or $5 (Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo)

  15. Adrian Prince says:

Thanks for this. I’ve been looking for something similar for years. I’ll try and add Greenland in a couple of months.

  16. Rahul S says:

    Update on Colombia:

Davivienda charged me a fee (and others) – just didn’t inform me about it at all, I only noticed it in the online banking… Declined conversion, of course – it seems to charge some cards, some not.

Banco Caja Social was the only one not charging any fees, but they have small limit, but if you can find it, it’s a good option.

Servibanca is the best I think, it consistently gives out 2 000 000 for foreign cards with 22500 fee.

  17. Chris says:

Kenya: DTB (Diamond Trust Bank) no fees. Tested in Malindi, April 2024

  18. LAXtoFCO says:

Forgot to mention, tip 3: Decline any offer of “conversion” at the ATM; it’s a rip-off exchange rate.

  19. LAXtoFCO says:

In my travels in Italy I have only ever seen one or two bank chains that charge a fee at their ATMs. I just cancel and walk a few meters to a different bank, as most don’t charge any fee.
    Two tips:
    (1) To avoid getting larger bills (which Italian businesses seem to despise for some reason), withdraw your cash from one of these free bank ATMs in the amount of 80 euros; you’ll get all 20-euro notes, which are easier to spend. Then just withdraw more often, as needed.
    (2) Don’t use commercial ATMs that are not actual bank ATMs; they will definitely charge a fee.

This list is really awesome and should be placed more prominently. I would also suggest to add the date of the submissions in brackets, since such things may change … so it’s useful to know when exactly it was experienced.

  35. Sven says:

PERU: as of November 2023, it seems almost all ATMs charge fees up to 20-39 PEN (I tried the ATMs from Interbank, BBVA, Scotiabank in Lima downtown and at the airport – all of them charged fees). The only exception that I found is Caja Arequipa with no fees (verified twice in Cusco and in Lima).

CZECH REPUBLIC: while it is known that the Euronet ATMs often charge hefty fees, it was suggested that some other ATMs don’t charge fees. I tried one of them, Air Bank, which was supposed to have no fees but in reality it charged 125 CZK fees (as of December 2023). The tricky thing was that when you decline the (bad) currency conversion, it automatically dispensed the money and charged this 125 CZK fee without notifying or asking for permission to charge this fee! It seems some other banks also do this, so be very careful about withdrawing in Czech Republic – best thing is to not withdraw any money because 99.5% of the time you can pay with your credit card anyhow (even in places like a Christmas market).
