Route
Your cruise will begin in the vibrant city of Cape Town, South Africa. Before the ship departs late in the evening, you might have time to explore landmarks like Table Mountain or the V&A Waterfront.
After a day at sea, you’ll reach Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) from where you can visit Addo National Park. Following another sea day, the ship will call at the bustling port city of Durban and then East London, allowing you to explore South Africa’s scenic eastern coastline.
The journey then takes you back to Cape Town for a unique overnight stay, giving you a full day to delve deeper into the city’s culture and attractions. From there, the cruise heads north towards the dramatic landscapes of Namibia.
In Namibia, you’ll have an overnight stay in Walvis Bay, known for its lagoon teeming with flamingos, followed by a stop in the historic German colonial town of Lüderitz. A final day at sea provides time to relax and enjoy the ship’s amenities before your adventure concludes back where it began, in Cape Town.

The Ship
The AIDAstella was built in 2013. It is 253 meters long and 32 meters wide. The ship, part of the Sphinx class, reaches a maximum speed of 23 knots and has capacity for up to 2,200 passengers and 600 crew members. It is also equipped with a modern system to prevent organisms from being transferred in ballast water to foreign ecosystems.
For leisure and recreation, the ship features three swimming pools (though they are on the smaller side), a casino, a disco, and a cinema. A shopping street offers retail therapy, while sports enthusiasts can use the sports court and jogging track. The heart of the ship’s entertainment is the central “Theatrium,” although finding a seat with a good view can sometimes be a challenge. For relaxation, the expansive wellness area spans 2,600 square meters.
Dining options are plentiful, with a total of 8 restaurants, including Italian and Japanese specialty venues, and 14 bars. The buffet restaurants offer a wide variety of included meals, along with select complimentary beverages like table wine during main meals. While the food in the specialty restaurants is complimentary, beverages are charged separately. A unique feature for beer lovers is the ship’s own onboard brewery.
The main onboard language is German, and the currency used for all transactions is the Euro.

Getting There & Back
This cruise begins and ends in Cape Town, South Africa, so you will need to arrange a round-trip flight. One of the best options is flying from London with Norse for €542 r/t, including luggage.
Ensure to arrive with plenty of time to spare, as the ship will not wait for delayed passengers. It’s also worth checking flights to Johannesburg, as they can sometimes be significantly cheaper, requiring an additional domestic flight to Cape Town.
