Emerald Princess: 16-Night Hawaii Cruises from Long Beach for €956 / $1,123 pp in an Outside Cabin

Honolulu Shore Hawaii

Hawaii is expensive. As an introductory trip, Princess Cruises offers a more convenient alternative from Los Angeles. You’ll spend four days on four different islands, with 5 sea days before and after your visit due to the geographical location. The 17-day cruise is available from €859 in an inside cabin. Given the small price difference, an outside cabin from €956 is well worth it (prices per person). Balcony cabins are available from €1,692 per person. Unfortunately, solo travellers face a surcharge and can book from €1,194.

The cruise price includes full board in the main and buffet restaurants, as well as coffee, water, tea, and iced tea during the buffet’s opening hours. Most onboard facilities and activities (e.g., use of sun loungers and pools on the outer deck, shows in the theatre, gym, etc.) are also included in the package.

Important

Princess Cruises adds an automatic crew gratuity of US$17 (~€14) per person, per day to your onboard account.

If you live in Europe, we recommend booking through Travel-Dealz, and if you live in the USA, book via CruiseDirect, as long as the price difference is not significant. If the difference is considerable, you can choose the cheaper option, but keep in mind that the consumer guarantees are different for Americans and Europeans.

Route

Your journey begins in Long Beach, the bustling port city just south of Los Angeles. Before embarking, you could explore the iconic Queen Mary ship-hotel, visit the Aquarium of the Pacific, or enjoy the vibrant downtown waterfront. Once aboard the Discovery Princess, you’ll set sail across the vast Pacific Ocean.

The first leg of your adventure consists of five relaxing days at sea. This is the perfect opportunity to familiarize yourself with the ship’s numerous amenities, from its pools and spa to the diverse dining and entertainment options. Enjoy the endless ocean views as you make your way towards the volcanic archipelago of Hawaii.

Your Hawaiian discovery begins in Hilo on the Big Island, a gateway to the spectacular Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The next day, you’ll arrive in Kahului, Maui, known for its beautiful beaches and the scenic “Road to Hana.” Your island hopping continues to Nawiliwili on Kauai, the “Garden Isle,” famous for its lush landscapes and the stunning Waimea Canyon. The grand finale of your Hawaiian tour is a full day and evening in Honolulu, Oahu, where you can visit Pearl Harbor, hike Diamond Head, or relax on Waikiki Beach.

After saying “Aloha” to Hawaii, you’ll embark on another five-day crossing of the Pacific. Before returning to California, you’ll make a final stop in Ensenada, Mexico, a charming port known for its local cuisine and the nearby La Bufadora blowhole. Your unforgettable cruise concludes back in Long Beach.

Visa Info

Most Europeans need an electronic system for travel authorization (ESTA) to enter the USA for up to 90 days. This costs US$21 (~€19) and you should apply for it a couple of days before your trip, at the latest.

There are some cases where you cannot apply for an ESTA, e.g. if you’ve been to Cuba since 2021 or to Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, or North Korea since March 2011. In those cases, you’ll need to get a visa from a US embassy or consulate, which can take multiple weeks.

The Ship

The Emerald Princess was launched in 2007 with a capacity for over 3,100 passengers. At that time, with a length of 290 meters, it was one of the largest ships and the second in the Crown Class. The last major renovation was in 2019, making it relatively recent. Due to its construction year, the cabins and bathrooms are somewhat below average.

Aside from the cabins, the public areas are still competitive today. Princess Cruises operates primarily in the premium segment, offering a significantly higher level of service compared to the cruise lines commonly found in Europe.

With Princess Cruises, you’ll find classic cruises tailored more towards older Americans. Therefore, you can enjoy good food, a show, or an evening lecture, but you won’t find a theme park here. Sea days are best suited for relaxation, with comfortable deck chairs, some in sheltered areas, a small golf course, a comprehensive library, a cigar bar, an art gallery, and high-quality shows (dance & music, magic, acrobatics, cabaret & comedy). For those with a heavier wallet, a large casino and numerous shops are also available.

Dining is available at the buffet and in the main restaurant, as well as in the atrium’s 24-hour café for free. Specialty restaurants charge a fee of US$19 (~€16) to US$39 (~€33). The suites have their own restaurant with upgraded dining options. Ice water and lemonade are included in the price, while other beverages are sold at standard restaurant prices.

Special features include a sheltered aft deck with a pool, as well as the Skywalkers nightclub on deck 18, offering a beautiful view. The amenities on deck and in the public areas are of higher quality than on many larger ships.

Finally, here are some numbers and facts:

  • Year built: 2004 – 2007 (major renovation in 2019)
  • 3,114 passengers (double occupancy) – 1,200 crew members
  • Powered by 2 fixed pitch propellers (causing vibrations)
  • Maximum speed: 21 knots / 40 km/h
  • 6 restaurants (4 specialty restaurants available for an additional fee of $19 – $39)
  • Dining at fast food stands & cafés is included
  • 4 pools distributed across the upper deck, along with 7 whirlpools
  • Onboard language: English
  • 14 passenger decks + medical center

Getting There & Back

The cruise starts and ends in Los Angeles (Long Beach), so you will need to book round-trip flights to Los Angeles (LAX). We recommend arriving at least one day before the cruise departure to avoid any issues. For the example cruise departing on November 18, 2025, you could fly in on November 16 and fly back on December 5, 2025. Flights from major European hubs like Stockholm can be found from around €480, including luggage.
