The interface is simple and easy to navigate. While it is very likely that you will get your desired hotel once chosen, Qatar Airways reserves the right to rebook you to a different hotel in the same category without prior notice. That could result in you missing out on perks like free breakfast if you hold a status at a specific chain.

Depending on the fare, a stopover in Doha that lasts for more than 24 hours can lead to a higher price. This is mostly due to additional taxes and fees, since you won’t just simply change aircraft but arrive in Doha and then depart again separately. But more often than not, the discount you get on the hotel rate will compensate for the higher ticket price.

Editor’s Note: Qatar Airways’ stopover program is forthcoming and straight forward. In most cases, you will visit a country you otherwise wouldn’t have visited while staying at a hotel that otherwise would’ve been far more expensive. Gulf carrier Emirates, one of the largest and most influential airlines in the world, is currently selling tickets for its non-stop flights from Milan to New York at a very reasonable price. You can get a round-trip from Italy to JFK airport for €489 which includes a checked bag.

Full transparency: You can find non-stop flights with American Airlines (to JFK) or United (to Newark) for as little as €410 during the travel period. You can find even cheaper prices with a change of planes with Lisbon and Copenhagen. That being said, Emirates offers the cheapest non-stop tickets including checked bags.

The Ship

The MSC Virtuosa was built in 2021 and is one of the largest ships in the MSC fleet (Meraviglia-Plus class). It is 331 meters long and 43 meters wide. The Raffles The Palm Dubai enjoys overwhelmingly positive reviews, (e.g. 4.6/5 on Google or 4.9/5 on Tripadvisor). Guests praise the quality of service and the size and equipment of the rooms. The only recurring point of criticism is guests complaining about not getting a (unreasonably) early check-in prior to 10 am and a lack of professionalism from the valet parking service. While these are understandable concerns at a high-priced luxury property, it also shows that the hotel itself leaves little room for improvement.

Editor’s Note: The remote location of the hotel makes the included second hot meal per day absolutely worth it. While many people rightfully moan about Dubai’s scorching hot summers – you are going to spend the majority of the time in the water or inside your 60 m² luxury hotel room, which doesn’t sound too bad. While I usually prefer to be in the middle of the action, this deal seems like a very appealing option for a three-to-four day time-out in the Summer Holidays.

Hainan Airlines is China’s only airline rated with five stars from Skytrax. The alleged premium carrier currently sells discounted tickets from New Zealand and Australia to Europe. A long layover in Shenzhen or Hainan Island’s capital Haikou is necessary during the trip. Prices start at €1,492 (~NZ$2,979) for business class flights from Auckland to Milan or just €220 (~A$378) for economy tickets from Australia to London.

Editor’s Note: The MS Europa is renowned to be one of the best cruise ships in the world. Not necessarily regarding entertainment, but the cabins and dining are said to be top-notch. However, be aware that of the 400 passengers around you, most will probably be retired Germans.

The Route

The cruise begins in Piraeus, where the ship does not leave the harbour until late in the evening. This allows for a convenient journey to Greece without the need for an overnight stay beforehand. The first port of call is Nafplio, the former capital of Greece. There, Syntagma Square with its cosy cafés and restaurants invites you to linger. From the Palamidi and Akronafplia fortresses, you can enjoy wonderful views.

The journey then continues to Mykonos, where the MS Europa stays overnight in port. The island is considered one of the country’s most popular destinations. It is particularly renowned for its windmills, which blend beautifully with the surrounding landscape and create a stunning backdrop. After a stop in Delos, the ship leaves Greece and sails to Kuşadası.

Just a few kilometres away is the historic site of Ephesus, where the splendour of Roman antiquity is reflected. The cruise then continues to Bozcaada. The island lies about 20 kilometres from the Dardanelles and is considered Turkey’s most important wine-growing region, as almost a third of Turkish wine comes from here.

Another highlight is the extended stay of two nights in the metropolis of Istanbul. This leaves you plenty of time to visit the most significant sights such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. A stroll through the old town is also highly recommended.

Afterwards, the Greek city of Kavala awaits you. The old town is dominated by a medieval castle dating back to 1425 and offers impressive views of the surrounding coastline. The Ship

The MS Europa, operated by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, is a small luxury cruise ship that has long been positioned at the upper end of the market. Launched in 1999 and extensively modernised over the years, it carries fewer than 400 passengers, which fundamentally shapes the experience on board. Rather than scale or spectacle, the ship is built around space, privacy, and a calm, orderly atmosphere.

Public areas are understated and deliberately uncluttered. Lounges, bars, and observation spaces are designed for quiet conversation rather than entertainment-driven crowds. There is a theatre for lectures, talks, and occasional performances, but nightlife is low-key. Deck space is generous for the number of guests, making it easy to find quiet outdoor areas even on sea days. The overall feel is closer to a private club than a resort-style cruise ship.

Dining is a central part of the Europa experience, with multiple restaurants offering fine-dining–level cuisine rather than large-scale buffet service. Meals are unhurried, service is formal but restrained, and the focus is on consistency rather than variety for its own sake. There is no pressure to book speciality venues or upgrade experiences; the ship operates on an all-inclusive basis that keeps onboard routines simple and predictable.

All cabins are suites, many with balconies, and are designed more like hotel rooms than cruise ship cabins, with generous space and storage. The passenger mix typically skews older and well-travelled, and the atmosphere reflects that: quiet, international, and destination-focused. MS Europa is best suited to travellers who value space, service, and a measured pace at sea over entertainment, innovation, or a sense of buzz.

SO/ is one of Accor Hotels‘ upper scale brands, combining central locations with fresh design ideas. While prices close €100/night are usually hard to find for these hotels, you can currently score such a rate for the SO/ Auckland. If you stay at least three nights at the hotel, you can stay for the price of €104 per night or €312 in total.

Not only is that a decent price by itself, it also includes breakfast, early check-in, late check-out, a $100 food and beverage credit and is fully refundable. We have found availabilities for this price from April through October 2026.

Your booking is a Collection King room, though you will likely be upgraded to the next best category, a Studio King room. Please bear in mind that the upgrade could also just mean a Collection King room with a better view. Both rooms are more than 30m² large and come with amenities like a Nespresso machine. The bathroom features both a tub and a walk-shower.

The Hotel

SO/ Auckland is a design-led hotel located in the Britomart district, right at the edge of the CBD and the waterfront. It sits within walking distance of downtown offices, restaurants, ferry terminals and major sights like the Sky Tower. The rooms are modern and, many with harbour or city views, and the property includes a restaurant, bar, gym and indoor pool. It suits travellers who want a central base with contemporary styling rather than a traditional luxury hotel experience. The Waitemate railway station is close by.

Previous guests have left good reviews (e.g., 4.4/5 on Google). Both the location of the hotel and quality of the interior is praised unanimously. Recurring points of criticism are the perceived over-use of design elements that negatively impacts functionality. The lackluster options during breakfast are criticized quite often, too.

Editor’s Note: This rate saves you more than one-year ASMALLWORLD premium membership costs you – which opens even more doors to cheap hotels by itself. A good deal for a modern hotel in an excellent location.

Booking directly on Accor’s website, the cheapest refundable rate including breakfast starts at roughly €151/night. You can currently book a 13-night cruise in an inside cabin from just €580 per person. However, the outside cabins from €625 are significantly more appealing as they cost only €45 more per person for the entire trip. Route

Your journey begins in Tampa, on Florida’s Gulf Coast. It is worth arriving a day or two early to enjoy the beaches or visit the nearby theme parks in Orlando. The ship departs in the afternoon, heading south toward the Caribbean.

The first stop is Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island in the Bahamas. Here you can enjoy a classic beach day with white sand and turquoise water before the ship turns east into the Atlantic. You will then have a relaxing stretch of six sea days to enjoy the ship’s amenities.

The crossing includes stops in the Azores, breaking up the journey. First comes Faial Island, home to the stunning Caldeira crater hike amid lush volcanic landscapes, followed by Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, famed for its crater lakes and greenery.

The Ship

The Norwegian Dawn, launched in 2002 and refurbished several times since, is a mid-sized ship in Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet, carrying around 2,300 passengers. Compared to the line’s newer mega-ships, it feels more manageable in scale, with a layout that’s straightforward to navigate.

One of the ship’s defining features is its Freestyle Cruising approach, with a wide variety of dining venues rather than fixed meal times. The Dawn has more than ten restaurants, ranging from main dining rooms and buffets to speciality options like a steakhouse, teppanyaki, and Italian.

Entertainment includes a theatre for production shows, a casino, and lounges with live performances. Outdoors, there are pools, hot tubs, a sports court, and deck space for sunbathing. The onboard currency is the US Dollar, though card payments are standard.

Getting There & Back

Since this cruise starts in Florida and ends in Portugal, you will need a one-way flight from Europe to the U.S. Unfortunately, this cruise departs during Easter holidays, and affordable options are limited. If you want to travel with a flag carrier on a direct flight, your best option is to fly on April 3 with Iberia on a non-stop flight from Madrid to Orlando for €469, including luggage.

You’ll then be shown the prices for each outbound and inbound date, with the cheapest marked in green. Be aware that Skyscanner doesn’t have all prices loaded. Dates with a magnifying glass could be available as well. Make sure to experiment a bit.

While we recommend using Skyscanner to search for availability, we wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for booking. Booking through a trustable OTA, such as Trip.com (with better customer service and good connections to Air China) should be better than some random OTA. Their website is also more user-friendly (especially for English-speakers) than Air China’s website. The only advantage of Air China’s website is that it has a +/- 3 day calendar, with reliable results.

Most flights are operated non-stop by Airbus A350 aircraft (Cancun appears to be A330 only). Flights to Santo Domingo may have a short stop in Samana, and vice versa. Flights to Saint Martin are routed via Guadeloupe, with the connection between Guadeloupe and Grand Case operated by an ATR 72.

While the name Air Caraïbes might be associated with budget travel—which is somewhat true for their tight Economy Class—the Business Class is a different story. The Airbus A350 features a modern business class with lie-flat seats. Fares also include lounge access, enhanced catering, and two checked bags up to 32 kg each.

Important: Only the Airbus A350 offers a competitive lie-flat product. You should avoid booking the Airbus A330 if possible, as it does not offer a flat sleeping surface despite recent fleet modernization.

From Frankfurt to Ulaanbaatar, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner is used according to flight schedule data. This aircraft type features a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone seat configuration with lie-flat seats. You can also find more information on the business class experience at OMAAT or in our review. The flight time between Frankfurt and Mongolia is just under 9 hours.

Between Mongolia and Seoul, Boeing 787 Dreamliners (lie-flat), Boeing 767s (angled-flat), or Boeing 737MAX (recliner) are used. On the return trip, you can only avoid the Boeing 737 if you are willing to take a long stopover in Mongolia.
