Sweet Spot: Book SAS Short-Haul Flights at Flying Blue for 1,500 miles + €18 o/w

SAS Boeing 737 in LHR

As a regular Travel-Dealz reader, you probably didn’t miss the big news: Following the acquisition by Air France & KLM, SAS Scandinavian Airlines switched from Star Alliance to SkyTeam on September 1.

Recent developments have provided some exciting updates. It’s now clear how many miles can be earned with Flying Blue for SAS flights, and conversely, SkyTeam flights can now be booked using SAS miles.

We noticed that Flying Blue offers highly attractive award flights with SAS. Upon closer inspection, it’s even better than expected. The cheapest award flight starts at just 1,500 miles plus €18 in taxes.

Update

As of 25 December 2024, Flying Blue has increased SAS award prices to a minimum 5,000 miles and 15,000 in SAS Plus.

Info

The KLM / Air France website seems to still have a few issues. On many routes (especially to/from Stockholm), either no results are displayed or only Air France / KLM flights are shown, with a layover. Booking via the KLM or Air France app seems to work better.

Also, be aware that cancelling or rebooking tickets is usually not feasible, as a cancellation fee of €70 would apply.

Short-Haul Economy Class Flights

The highlight of this sweet spot is the particularly short flights in SAS Go. The mile price seems to be roughly calculated as kilometres × 10 = award flight price. For example, a short hop from Aarhus to Copenhagen costs just 1,500 miles plus taxes. The Hamburg to Copenhagen route is also highly attractive at 2,900 miles.

These prices include 23 kg of checked luggage. Here are some examples:

  • Aarhus 🇩🇰 → Copenhagen 🇩🇰 for 1,500 miles + €18
  • Bergen 🇳🇴 → Stavanger 🇳🇴 for 1,700 miles + €18
  • Tromsø 🇳🇴 → Alfa 🇳🇴 for 1,800 miles + €21

For comparison, SAS EuroBonus charges 5,000 points for domestic flights and at least 10,000 points for international flights (plus taxes).

Short-Haul SAS Plus Flights

SAS Plus is the premium economy class for European flights (marketed as business class by Flying Blue). It offers perks like lounge access (where available). Flying Blue lists the baggage allowance as 2 × 32 kg, but this may be an error. There’s no guaranteed free middle seat.

Here are some example prices for one-way tickets:

  • Aarhus 🇩🇰 → Copenhagen 🇩🇰 for 3,300 miles + €18
  • Bergen 🇳🇴 → Stavanger 🇳🇴 for 3,500 miles + €18
  • Tromsø 🇳🇴 → Alfa 🇳🇴 for 3,900 miles + €21
  • Visby 🇸🇪 → Stockholm 🇸🇪 for 5,000 miles + €20

  • Umea 🇸🇪 → Stockholm 🇸🇪 for 10,600 miles + €22
  • Tromsø 🇳🇴 → Svalbard 🇸🇯 for 11,800 miles + €18
  • Zurich 🇨🇭 → Copenhagen 🇩🇰 for 11,800 miles + €38
  • Copenhagen 🇩🇰 → London 🇬🇧 for 12,100 miles + €30
  • Oslo 🇳🇴 → London 🇬🇧 for 15,000 miles + €18
  • Kirkenes 🇳🇴 → Oslo 🇸🇯 for 17,000 miles + €27

For comparison, SAS EuroBonus charges 10,000 points for one-way domestic flights in SAS Plus and at least 15,000 points for international flights (plus taxes).

Long-Haul Economy Class Flights

So far, we haven’t found any long-haul flights available in premium economy or business class. However, there are some economy-class award flights with SAS through Flying Blue:

  • Boston 🇺🇸 → Copenhagen 🇩🇰 for 18,300 miles + €30
  • Copenhagen 🇩🇰 → Toronto 🇨🇦 for 19,500 miles + €30
  • Toronto 🇨🇦 → Copenhagen 🇩🇰 for 19,500 miles + €50
  • Chicago 🇺🇸 → Copenhagen 🇩🇰 for 21,300 miles + €30

By comparison, SAS EuroBonus charges 30,000 points for an economy-class ticket. However, EuroBonus offers premium economy for 40,000 and business class for 50,000 points, which is far more attractive.

This loophole seems to have closed unannounced now. Most routes to Germany now showing +10k in January. Intra-DK its 5k. Maybe worth an update of the post?
