Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, is known for its volcanic landscapes, coral reefs, and multicultural heritage. Key sights include the white-sand beaches of Flic-en-Flac and Belle Mare, the scenic Black River Gorges National Park, the Seven Coloured Earths in Chamarel, and the capital, Port Louis, with its lively market and waterfront. The local currency is the Mauritian rupee (MUR). Prices are moderate: meals and local transport are affordable, while imported goods and high-end resorts can be costly. The climate is tropical, with warm temperatures year-round—hot and humid from November to April, and cooler, drier weather from May to October.
Getting around Mauritius is relatively straightforward but can be slow due to narrow roads and frequent traffic, especially around Port Louis. Buses are the main form of public transport, cheap and fairly extensive, though not always punctual. Taxis and ride-hailing services are widely available but more expensive. For longer distances or exploring rural areas, renting a car is common, though driving is on the left and parking can be limited in towns. The island also has a growing light rail system connecting parts of the central region, but coverage remains limited outside major urban areas.
