Star Alliance member TAP Air Portugal offers cheap flights from Paris Orly to San Francisco and New York. Prices start at €286 for the West Coast, New York is a little cheaper. There is little availability for New York in 2022, there are plenty of dates in early 2023.
While flights include onboard service, checked bags cost an extra €100, when booked on TAP’s website. You can also add a free stopover in Lisbon or Porto for up to 120 hours. This is a great chance to explore the Portuguese cities on your way to the USA without having to plan an additional trip to Portugal.
TAP flights purchased before June 30, 2022, can be rebooked without having to pay a rebooking fee, but the price difference will have to be paid. This does not apply to Discount fares.
Our availability calendar shows you all flight dates at the lowest fare for trips up to 28 days. After selecting an out-and inbound flight date, it will forward you to TAP’s website or our flight search, where you can book the tickets.

The short-haul flights are operated onboard TAP’s A320 family fleet or its subsidiary’s Portugalia’s Embraer E190s. Most of the long-haul flights are operated by the airline’s brand new Airbus A330-900s which are in a 2-4-2 configuration, equipped with in-flight entertainment.
You can also fly the narrowbody Airbus A321LR for flights between Porto and New York. You can vary layover times as both short 1 hour transfers and few-hours long ones are available.
Search & Book
According to the fare rules, the offer is valid until July 1, 2022 with the latest possible inbound arriving on June 13, 2023. There is a minimum stay requirement of either 5 days or a night from Sunday to Monday and a maximum stay of 30 days.
We recommend booking these flights on the TAP website, especially if you wish to add a free stopover or bags. You can adjust the dates on our flight calendar or browse Google Flights. Alternatively, you can use our flight search tool to book through online travel agencies, which are about €30 cheaper.
Why is booking with an airline better than with an online travel agency?
More often than not, online travel agencies offer lower fares than airlines do. We still recommend booking with the airlines directly. There are two main reasons for that:
Better Customer Service
In case any problems like delays, cancellations or missed connections arise, you can communicate directly with the airline. The airline has to take care of you because you have a contract with them.
If a travel agency issues your ticket, you may have to reach out to them first. You also depend on your OTA to forward information like flight changes instead of receiving them directly from the airline. In many cases, you may get a prime exhibition of responsibility shifting rather than problem-solving.
This especially applies to premium tickets. You don’t want to spend more than €1,000 to wind up with some budget OTA’s telephone hotline in case anything goes wrong.
Baggage and Other Fees
Economy fares not including hold luggage are industry standard by now. In most cases, travel agencies charge much higher baggage fees than the airlines themselves. If bags are not included in your fare, airlines are often the cheaper alternative.
This also applies to other things like food services, insurances or priority treatment. In almost all cases, you pay less for additional amenities when booking on the airlines’ website.
Mileage
TAP issues all flights in booking class O. This will get you the following miles for a trip to San Francisco:
- 3,084 Award Miles + 160 Points on Miles&More
- 1,312 Miles on Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
- 1,312 Award Miles on Emirates Skywards
- 1,312 Extra Points on SAS EuroBonus
- 1,312 Miles on Egyptair Plus
- 1,312 Award Miles on Etihad Guest
- 1,056 Miles on Hainan Fortune Wings Club
- 656 Miles on Azul TodoAzul

Destination
Hotel prices in New York and San Francisco are among the highest in the US, usually start at roughly €80 depending on the hotel category. Whichever category and hotel you opt for, make sure to get the best price! Our recommendation is to search on booking.com, or even on our own Travel-Dealz hotel search:
Information & Tips for USA
The United States offers a wide range of tourist sights, from national parks like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon to cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. The currency is the U.S. dollar (USD), and card payments are widely accepted. Prices vary by region but can be high in major cities, especially for accommodation and dining. Weather differs greatly across the country—winters can be harsh in the north, while the south often stays mild; summers are generally hot and humid in many areas.
The U.S. transport infrastructure is highly car-dependent, especially outside major cities. Urban centres like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco have functional public transit, but many other cities have limited options. Between cities, domestic flights are common for long distances, while intercity buses and Amtrak trains cover some routes, though often with slower speeds and less frequency compared to other countries. Without a car, getting around can be inconvenient in many parts of the country.
