Royal Jordanian Royal Club Lifts RJ Segment Requirement for Status Qualification (Oneworld Sapphire Possible for €450)

Royal Jordanian fins

Royal Jordanian is one of the few airlines in the Oneworld Alliance that allows earning a frequent flyer status purely through segments. Previously, there was always a requirement to fly a minimum number of segments with Royal Jordanian itself – this now seems to have changed.

Apparently, without a major announcement, the Gulf airline Royal Jordanian has adjusted the requirements for status qualification. Now, you no longer need a minimum number of segments with Royal Jordanian to qualify for Oneworld Sapphire or Emerald status.

In recent months, the Royal Club has gained attention through its status match offer from various frequent flyer and hotel programs. For $149, one could match up to the Oneworld Sapphire status (Royal Jordanian Gold Sparrow).

Status Requirements in the Royal Club

Now there’s a subtle yet impactful change that makes the program very attractive even beyond the status match. Although the qualification requirements have not changed, the minimum segment requirement with Royal Jordanian has now been removed. This was confirmed to us in writing by a Royal Jordanian Royal Club Service Center employee.

“Yes sir, You can claim only [oneworld partner] flights to qualify or maintain your tier.”

RJ Customer Service

Previously, the following restrictions applied to each status level:

  • Silver JAY (Oneworld Ruby): Minimum of 2 Royal Jordanian segments
  • Gold Sparrow (Oneworld Sapphire): Minimum of 10 Royal Jordanian segments
  • Platinum Hawk (Oneworld Emerald): Minimum of 20 Royal Jordanian segments

Now, only the following requirements apply, regardless of the number of segments you fly with Royal Jordanian.

The requirements for the three tiers

To qualify for the two lower status levels, you need to do so within 12 months, and the status is valid for another 12 months. For Platinum Hawk, you only need to qualify once within the 12 months, and then the requalification period is a full 24 months, so you can enjoy the benefits of Oneworld Emerald for two years after the initial qualification.

Info

For all status match participants, there seems to be a requirement that you must have at least one flight with Royal Jordanian over the 12 months to qualify for status.

Royal Club Status Benefits

These are the benefits of each status:

Silver Jay (Oneworld Ruby)

The Silver Jay status at Royal Jordanian corresponds to the Oneworld Ruby status on flights with BA, JAL, Finnair, etc. Beyond this, there are a few notable benefits, even on Royal Jordanian flights:

  • All benefits of Oneworld Ruby on flights with Oneworld partners:
    • Business class check-in
    • Complimentary preferred seats (with exceptions)
    • Additional baggage allowance + priority boarding on some airlines (e.g., AA)
    • Priority on waitlist and standby
  • No mileage expiration

Gold Sparrow (Oneworld Sapphire)

The Gold Sparrow status corresponds to Oneworld Sapphire and is significantly more appealing. You gain access to airport lounges (with one guest), where available, on any Oneworld flight. Benefits include:

  • All Oneworld Sapphire benefits on Oneworld flights:
    • All Ruby benefits (see above)
    • Business class lounge access with one guest
    • Priority boarding
    • Free reservation of extra legroom seats (depending on the airline)
    • Additional baggage allowance (exceptions for light fares)
    • Priority baggage handling
  • On Royal Jordanian flights:
    • 1 upgrade voucher per year for Royal Jordanian Business Class
    • Fast Track at Immigration in Jordan
  • No mileage expiration

Platinum Hawk (Oneworld Emerald)

  • The Oneworld Emerald status offers the following benefits on Oneworld flights:
    • All Sapphire and Ruby benefits (see above)
    • First-class lounge access with one guest
    • Fast lane access
    • Additional baggage allowance
  • Gold Sparrow companion card for any person, with all Oneworld Sapphire benefits
  • On Royal Jordanian flights:
    • 2 upgrade vouchers per year for Royal Jordanian Business Class
    • Guaranteed economy availability on Royal Jordanian flights
    • A dedicated Royal Jordanian contact with a special hotline

Oneworld Sapphire for €450 and 2 Years of Emerald Status for €690

While distance-based qualification may be of interest depending on the routing, the main advantage of the Royal Club lies in the segment-based qualification. The lowest prices per segment can be achieved with Iberia on domestic flights within Spain, resulting in the following costs for a status run from scratch:

  • Gold Sparrow: 30 x €15 = €450
  • Platinum Hawk: 46 x €15 = €690 for qualification and €1,200 for requalification (€600 per year)
image

While this option may not be entirely practical, as few would take 30–40 flights within Spain each year, other options are available worldwide to accumulate segments affordably and quickly:

  • Domestic flights in the USA with Alaska Airlines start at €32.50 per segment
  • Domestic flights in the USA with American Airlines start at €37.50 per segment
  • Domestic flights within Japan with JAL start at €45 per segment
  • Flights within Europe with British Airways start at €47.50 per segment
  • Flights within Europe with Finnair start at €47.50 per segment

These options offer several ways to achieve Oneworld status cost-effectively. By combining them with award flights or other good deals, you can discover new destinations and secure Oneworld Sapphire or Emerald status.

Anyone have updates on segment run attempts? Also, as someone who’s US-based, I’ve heard some disappointing reports of RJ’s poor integration with US-based OW carriers, where AS and AA actually fail to recognize RJ members’ OW status at all without a call to customer support to manually put in a note about status. Anyone with status have any experience with that, or any success with getting RJ to fix that (purely seems to be an IT issue)? I was about to start planning a few segment runs, but I am now questioning if it’s worth it at all.

    • Jrix says:

I’m also interested in this point. Could anyone with RJ status attempt a dummy AA.com booking and report if they are allowed free seat selection + extra bags? If those benefits come through I’m fairly certain the lounge access would work. @Ivan could maybe help?

Also @Ivan please do post how the status run in May goes! I’ll probably do one Jan-Feb 2026 before my BA status dies, and cash prices in Spain are low.

  2. AG says:

As stated by another commenter, the RJ T&C still have the RJ segment requirements. Your source is a CSR that you claim told you this is no longer the case, however every RJ website and their own T&C contradicts your article. You leave no proof or receipts, no screenshots, nothing to actually show you had success pursuing this information. Also, if there was no announcement from RJ (as you say), what would even spur you to ask the CSR this very targeted question? Did a RJ executive let it slip to you that they were pursuing this change? Did you work directly on the change itself? Sorry, but ever since BA made the EC effectively useless, I’ve been doing my own research on how to maintain my OWE status and got very excited when I saw your article. However, I’m disappointed that you are putting this claim out as fact and getting many people’s hopes up with zero proof or true sources listed. If I’m wrong, I will gladly eat my words. But right now, “they forgot to update the T&C” is not a valid response.

    • Ivan says:

I assume you are addressing the author, Ditmar Lange,

As far as I’m concerned, Ditmar has been very clear in his answers to questions in the comments. Ditmar’s point is that you, as I did myself and reported on in earlier comments, contact RJRC CS (frequentflyer@rj.com) yourself to ask for confirmation. I hope, the more people ask, the more reason they have to eventually change the T&C to reflect the changes.

Yesterday, I scoured the RJ website and asked in FT whether RJRC program uses ‘soft landings’. Since nobody seemed to have a definite answer, I e-mailed RJRC CS and they confirmed by e-mail that they do. An (copy, screenshot, etc. of) e-mail confirmation to me, is hardly a bargaining chip for anyone else. So I urge you to do as you say you do, conduct your own research and not rely only on article comments and forum posts you consider lacking in credibility.

i check MH domestic cheap flight and they are all in Q class. almost always, even u select ECO Flex. the most expensive price.

What to do? i think it cant collect the segment then.

  4. Ivan says:

Do Iberia marketed but Iberia Express operated flights qualify?

    • Ditmar Lange says:

I’m not 100% certain as there’s no official information on this, but probably yes

      • Ivan says:

After first attempting ITA Matrix generated itineraries, turns out I had to provide Royal Jordanian (RJ) a PNR/ticket# for them to be able to confirm eligibility. Luckily, Iberia (IB) allows reserving tickets for a small fee each. Once I provided RJ with the reservation, I received written confirmation from them, that my Iberia-marketed (IB-flight#) but Iberia Express (I2) and Iberia Regional Air Nostrum (YW)-operated flights do earn RJ Royal Club (RC) tier & award miles and count as segments, as long as they book in eligible fare codes listed in RJ’s online mileage calculator (https://www.rj.com/en/royal-club/redeem/mileage-calculator).

I had status matched Air France KLM Flying Blue Platinum (AFKLFBP) to RJRC Gold Sparrow (GS). I have now booked to make a run for RJRC Platinum Hawk (PH) in May. Most IB-tickets bottomed out at 65 EUR for 4 segments and all are fare code A. I hope all works out as planned. Wish me luck…

        • Brian says:

          Hi Ivan,
Can you give some advise how to search EUR65 for 4 segments mentioned? Thanks

          • Ivan says:

            Hey Brian,
My comment below (December 16, 2024 at 07:52 CET) describes how I did it.

          • Ivan says:

Try ITA Matrix (with ITA Matrix Powertools Chrome extension):
            ‘Round Trip’ selected
Both ‘Routing Codes’: ib+ x (for only IB flights with 1 connection=2 segments each way)
Both ‘Extension Codes’: F bc=a (for A booking codes which seems to be the most affordable eligible fare class)
Select ‘See calendar of lowest fares’
‘Duration’: 0 (for same day returns)

            Select a result
Select ‘Use Kayak’ in Powertools menu and filter the results in Kayak (ITA Matrix and Kayak prices can differ dramatically)

      • Oscar says:

No, I2 (Iberia Express) don’t qualify on RJ.

        • Ditmar Lange says:

Even when booked with an IB flight number? Interesting

        • Ivan says:

If I understand it correctly, for RJ mileage earning and segment count only oneworld member airlines marketed AND oneworld member airlines & their oneworld affiliate airlines operated flights with fare codes listed in RJ RC online mileage calculator (https://www.rj.com/en/royal-club/redeem/mileage-calculator) are eligible. Iberia Express (I2) & Air Nostrum (YW) marketed AND operated flights with I2 & YW flight#’s clearly are not eligible, as I2 & YW are not oneworld member airlines.

Iberia marketed AND Iberia Express & Air Nostrum operated flights with IB flight#’s AND fare codes listed in RJ RC online mileage calculator (https://www.rj.com/en/royal-club/redeem/mileage-calculator) are eligible, according to Royal Jordanian Royal Club customer service. To have this confirmed in writing, I e-mailed RJ RC customer service an e-ticket# and PNR for IB r/t AMS-MAD-VLC v.v. in J (A) with AMS-MAD operated by I2 and MAD-VLC operated by YW.

I still have to do my segment run in May and will then have definite confirmation whether I understood it correctly or not…

  5. VM says:

From my understanding, it seems that you don’t need to do the status match/challenge at all and can just fly 30 segments to reach OneWorld Sapphire, provided that you credit the flight to Royal Jordanian. Is this correct?
If this is true, then domestic flight within Malaysia using Malaysian Airlines might be quite economical too (at least for readers in South East Asia), which can cost around USD 20-30.

    • Ditmar Lange says:

This is correct. HOWEVER, be careful. For the segment to count, it needs to be in a booking class that gets you miles at RJ. And that is NOT the case for those super cheap Malaysian Airlines flights.

      • VM says:

Interesting information. Where can I find the reference for this clause?
“For the segment to count, it needs to be in a booking class that gets you miles at RJ.”.
I have tried checking rj.com and could not find the clause, or maybe I just accidentally skip the TnC.

        • Ivan says:

I couldn’t find it either. Royal Jordanian (RJ) per email confirmed to me that all Oneworld (OW) mileage earning eligible flights count as segments to qualify for RJ Royal Club (RC) elite status. To find which flights with which fare codes are eligible, I was directed to RJ’s online mileage calculator (https://www.rj.com/en/royal-club/redeem/mileage-calculator).

If in any doubt about eligibility, please request confirmation by sending an email to frequentflyer@rj.com attaching your booking confirmation/e-ticket and/or mentioning the PNR/e-ticket#.

      • Ivan says:

This seems at odds with what the RJRC T&C say about ‘Segment Count’:
“Each flight from point A to point B is one segment;”
        and
“Segment Count is separate from Award Miles and Tier Miles.”

    • Ivan says:

You are right, but Ditmar’s caution seems correct too. I sure will enjoy priority services, lounge access, etc., which the status matched Royal Jordanian Royal Club Gold Sparrow membership affords me, for my Iberia (IB) flights in Economy Published Discounted class A. I abandoned my intention to take some eligible flights in Spain on IB this spring and some in Malaysia on Malaysian Airlines (MH) this summer, after I checked the eligible MH fare codes listed in RJ’s online mileage calculator (https://www.rj.com/en/royal-club/redeem/mileage-calculator) against ITA Matrix searches.

Clearly most – easily available – budget IB flights (/w IB flight#), including those operated by IB Oneworld (OW) affiliate airlines Iberia Express (I2) and Iberia Regional Air Nostrum (YW), do and most – easily available – budget MH flights (/w MH flight#), NOT including MH non-OW affiliate sudsidiary airlines Firefly and MASwings, do not book in their respective eligible fare codes.

      • VM says:

        Thanks for the update, Ivan.
I understand Ditmar’s caution, and just want to check if this is economically viable to chase the status with other OW airlines.
As I live in South East Asia, it would be easier for me to do it with Malaysian Airlines.

        > …after I checked the eligible MH fare codes listed in RJ’s online mileage calculator…
Did you mean that anything outside of the booking class listed below is considered ineligible for the section count in RJ? (such as booking class O, Q, X, etc.)
Will check and compare with ITA matrix search later.

I have checked the RJ miles calculator and can only see these information:
        Award Type Booking Class Miles
        MH LVS CLASSES 2021 L V S 43
        MH KM CLASSES 2021 K M 86
        MH BH CLASSES 2021 B H 129
        MH BUS Z CLASS 2021 Z 172
        MH Y CLASS 2021 Y 172
        MH BUS CD CLASS 2021 C D 189
        MH BUS J CLASS 2021 J 215

        • Ivan says:

“Did you mean that anything outside of the booking class listed below is considered ineligible for the section count in RJ? (such as booking class O, Q, X, etc.)” That’s what RJ told me.

Try ITA Matrix (with ITA Matrix Powertools Chrome extension):
          ‘Round Trip’ selected
Both ‘Routing Codes’: mh+ x (for only MH flights with 1 connection=2 segments each way)
Both ‘Extension Codes’: F bc=s|bc=v (for S & V booking codes which seem to be the most affordable eligible fare classes)
Select ‘See calendar of lowest fares’
‘Duration’: 0 (for same day returns)

          Select a result
Select ‘Use Kayak’ in Powertools menu and filter the results in Kayak (ITA Matrix and Kayak prices can differ dramatically)
If any result seems economically viable, put a ticket on hold (for a fee) with the airline, travel agent or OTA if possible and send the reservation with PNR and e-ticket# to frequentflyer@rj.com to ask for confirmation of eligibility and report back to us.

It might be helpful to me for requalification as well, because I usually spend my summers in Malaysia…

        • Ivan says:

I just tried some ITA Matrix searches and same day return tickets with 4 segments don’t seem to get any more affordable than 110-120 EUR. You may want to consider nested non-same day return tickets. E.g. PEN-KUL-JHB v.v. seems to result in a number of options in Kayak for a minimum of 67 EUR each, which is almost the same as the 65 EUR I paid for IB domestic same day return tickets.

I would suggest to avoid any ticckets which contain MH-marketed, FY/MY-operated flights

  6. Ivan says:

The RJ RC ‘[Terms & Conditions](https://www.rj.com/en/royal-club/stay-connected/terms-and-conditions)’ page still reads:
    * Minimum RJ flight for Silver tier qualification or maintenance is 4.
    * Minimum RJ flights for Gold tier qualification or maintenance is 10.
    * Minimum RJ flights for Platinum tier qualification or maintenance is 20

    • Ditmar Lange says:

Yeah, we know, but they seem to have forgotten to update it. That’s why we contacted the airline to find out, and they confirmed that this is no longer the case.

  7. john says:

Does IB express count towards segments?

  8. Mikael says:

How are redemptions on RJ? It’s kind of cryptic and outdated on their site.
