SJ: Travel Across Sweden by (High-Speed) Train for €8/Trip (Jan–Mar 2026)

SJ Train in Stockholm

Sweden is a vast country, stretching more than 1,500 kilometers from north to south; roughly the same distance as from Hamburg to Rome. Thanks to an offer from the national railway SJ, you can currently cover almost that entire distance for just €10. You’ll spend a full day (and night) on the train, though.

The deal is especially interesting for shorter city pairs like Malmö–Stockholm or Malmö–Gothenburg. Those trips come out to the equivalent of only €8. Regular fares are at least double that, and savings of 70% or more are often possible thanks to excellent promotional availability.

The best prices are available to Scandic Hotels members (registration is free). Members receive a 10% discount on almost all SJ tickets via a special booking link. Everyone else pays slightly more.

The offer is only valid from December 3 to 5, 2025, for travel between January 1 and March 31, 2026. When booked through Scandic, the following prices apply:

  • Stockholm–Uppsala: 40 min Intercity for SEK 40 (~€4)
  • Gothenburg–Stockholm: 5 h regional train for SEK 67 (~€6)
  • Malmö–Gothenburg: 2h20 high-speed train for SEK 85 (~€8)
  • Gothenburg–Stockholm: 3h30 high-speed train for SEK 85 (~€8)
  • Malmö–Stockholm: 4h30 high-speed train for SEK 85 (~€8)
  • Stockholm–Umeå: 8 h high-speed train for SEK 85 (~€8)
  • Stockholm–Oslo 🇳🇴: 5 h high-speed train for SEK 85 (~€8)
  • Stockholm–Narvik 🇳🇴: 18 h night train¹ for SEK 103 (~€9)
  • Malmö–Stockholm–Umeå: 11 h high-speed train for SEK 103 (~€9)
  • Malmö–Stockholm–Kiruna: 20 h high-speed + night train¹ for SEK 112 (~€10)
  • Malmö–Stockholm–Luleå: 21 h high-speed + night train¹ for SEK 112 (~€10)

¹ At this price, even overnight journeys only include a regular seat. A berth in the sleeper car costs significantly more.

From Malmö to Stockholm for only SEK 85 (~€8).

Train Travel in Sweden

Several railway companies operate in Sweden, with SJ, the national railway, by far the largest, similar to Deutsche Bahn in Germany. In addition, the Finnish railway runs on the Stockholm–Gothenburg route (formerly MTR Express) and a few regional lines.

The flagships of Swedish rail travel are the X2000 and X3000 high-speed trains. Even though they are technically capable of higher speeds, they operate at a maximum of 200 km/h in Sweden. Due to neglected infrastructure, delays on high-speed services are common; so, much like in Germany. At least seat reservations are included free of charge on SJ.

One area where SJ has consistently impressed me is seating comfort. In my experience, it’s noticeably more comfortable than second class on a German ICE. Even though the X2000 fleet is currently being refurbished (with a higher seat count per coach), the seats remain well-padded and comfortable even after long hours.

Here’s a look at an older X2000 before refurbishment. All units will receive the new interior by 2027:
