The passes pay off in most, but not all cases. Some countries like France, Italy and Spain require paid reservations to use their high-speed train networks, adding additional costs to your passes. Especially travelling in France, Interrail can become expensive real quickly if you don’t stick to slow regional trains. TGV trains have a limited amount of seats for rail pass holders, with prices spiking weeks before departure.

On the other hand, Interrail can be a tremendous experience in countries like Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. You can also save a bunch in usually very expensive countries for foreign travellers like Norway and Sweden.

Participating Countries

While you can purchase passes for individual countries (like France) or groups of countries (like BeNeLux), not all enjoy the 20% discount. We have linked all countries for which discounted country passes are available:

To give you a general idea, you can use this map to see which countries require reservations for high speed and long distance trains. You can expect to pay at least €10 per reservation in countries like France, Italy and Spain.

What a s*** show, I bought a 7 day interrail pass back in march with travel days planned in june in France-UK-BE/NL.

Well could find a seat on any high speed french trains, available options needed multiple stop, each leg came with extra booking fees, securing a seat on any eurostar train is almost as expensive as a regular priced ticket.

I compared regular prices tickets for my days (a few trip using flixbus as well) then I decided to ask for a refund, stomached the 20% cancellation fee.

Plan your trip throughly and check availabilities before buying you pass if you plan to travel by high speed trains, compare with locally available passes as well.
