The passes pay off in most, but not all cases. Some countries like France, Italy and Spain require paid reservations to use their high-speed train networks, adding additional costs to your passes. Especially travelling in France, Interrail can become expensive real quickly if you don’t stick to slow regional trains. TGV trains have a limited amount of seats for rail pass holders, with prices spiking weeks before departure.

On the other hand, Interrail can be a tremendous experience in countries like Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. You can also save a bunch in usually very expensive countries for foreign travellers like Norway and Sweden.

Participating Countries

While you can purchase passes for individual countries (like France) or groups of countries (like BeNeLux), the 15% discount only applies to Global Passes, covering all 33 member countries of Interrail. You can use them in these countries:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
