The passes pay off in most, but not all, cases. Some countries like France, Italy and Spain require paid reservations to use their high-speed train networks, adding additional costs to your passes. Especially when travelling in France, Interrail can become really expensive quickly if you don’t stick to slow regional trains. TGV trains have a limited number of seats for rail pass holders, with prices spiking weeks before departure.
On the other hand, Interrail can be a tremendous experience in countries like Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. You can also save a bunch in usually very expensive countries for foreign travellers, like Norway and Sweden.
Editor’s Note: I have travelled Europe on an Interrail ticket twice and can wholeheartedly recommend it – it’s great for both mind and budget. Based on the past two years, the 25% discount is the highest you can get, as sales are usually limited to 20% off. Since you can start anytime within 11 months after purchase, you should buy now if you want to do an Interrail (or Eurail) trip in 2026.
Participating Countries
You can also purchase passes for individual countries (like France) or groups of countries (like BeNeLux) with a 25% discount. We have linked countries for which discounted country passes are available. These are valid in:

¹Public transport in Luxembourg is free in second class.
To give you a general idea, you can use this map to see which countries require reservations for high-speed and long-distance trains. You can expect to pay at least €10 per reservation in countries like France, Italy and Spain.

Previous Discounts
Interrail regularly discounts all or selected passes. Here is an overview of past promotions:
| Time | Promotional Discount |
|---|---|
| November 2025 | 25% off all passes |
| September 2025 | 20% off select passes |
| June 2025 | 20% off select passes |
| March 2025 | 15% off global passes |
| November/December 2024 | 25% off select passes |
| July 2024 | 20% off select passes |
| February/March 2024 | 15% off global passes |
| November 2023 | 25% off select passes |
| March 2023 | 10% off select passes |
| December 2022 | 10% off select passes |
| May 2022 | 50% off select passes |
The 50% discount in May 2022 was incredibly rare, and because of Interrail’s 50-year anniversary. It is unlikely to repeat anytime soon.

Just a footnote/Q as to the current 25% offer price pass being “non-refundable”: while there have been non-refundable sales in the past, on this occasion it would seem to suggest (as per your the screenshot in your post above): “Standard terms and conditions apply”. For the eurail/interrail .eu site purchased passes this should mean a 10% fee for refunds beyond 7 days (if no additional refund protection is taken out)?

Hi Jorg! Thanks for pointing that out. I’ve corrected the article.
What a s*** show, I bought a 7 day interrail pass back in march with travel days planned in june in France-UK-BE/NL.
Well could find a seat on any high speed french trains, available options needed multiple stop, each leg came with extra booking fees, securing a seat on any eurostar train is almost as expensive as a regular priced ticket.
I compared regular prices tickets for my days (a few trip using flixbus as well) then I decided to ask for a refund, stomached the 20% cancellation fee.
Plan your trip throughly and check availabilities before buying you pass if you plan to travel by high speed trains, compare with locally available passes as well.
