The only caveat is that you need to at least one long layover in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City in one direction, often spanning from the early morning to the late evening.

Shorter Layovers with Open Jaws

It’s possible to avoid long layovers entirely by booking an open jaw, flying to Melbourne and returning from Sydney. This way, you only have to wait roughly two hours at a Vietnamese airport in both directions.

Both of your flights from Paris to Vietnam and Vietnam to Australia will be operated by Vietnam Airlines using Airbus A350 aircraft, featuring a 2-4-2 configuration in premium economy class.

The cheapest itineraries require either a long layover in Vietnam or a Vietnamese domestic flight in at least one direction. While the latter may save some time, it’s also a lot of hassle: domestic and international terminals in Vietnam are never connected airside. You have to immigrate at one airport, switch to the domestic terminal, catch your connection and after arriving, switch the terminal again, stand in line for emigration and pass security a third time.

It is much more convenient to just swallow the pill of a long layover in one city and make the best out of it: Use the time to explore one of Vietnam’s largest cities. Most European citizens can enter the country visa-free.

More often than not, online travel agencies offer lower fares than airlines do. We still recommend booking with the airlines directly. There are two main reasons for that:

Better Customer Service
In case any problems like delays, cancellations or missed connections arise, you can communicate directly with the airline. The airline has to take care of you because you have a contract with them.

If a travel agency issues your ticket, you may have to reach out to them first. You also depend on your OTA to forward information like flight changes instead of receiving them directly from the airline. In many cases, you may get a prime exhibition of responsibility shifting rather than problem-solving.

This especially applies to premium tickets. You don’t want to spend more than €1,000 to wind up with some budget OTA’s telephone hotline in case anything goes wrong.

Baggage and Other Fees
Economy fares not including hold luggage are industry standard by now. In most cases, travel agencies charge much higher baggage fees than the airlines themselves. If bags are not included in your fare, airlines are often the cheaper alternative.
