British Airways Club: Bonus Tier Points for Flights After April 2025 (Limited Time Offer, Registration Required)

On December 30, 2024, British Airways surprised and shocked us with the announcement of radical changes to its loyalty program, the Executive Club. Starting April 1, 2025, it will be re-branded to British Airways Club. What’s way worse, the program switches to revenue-based status qualification, in many cases doubling the number of flights necessary to get an elite status.

To ease the transition, British Airways currently runs a promotion that promises a fixed amount of bonus Tier Points for flights booked before February 14, 2025 and departing after April 1. While this is a nice way to earn extra Tier Points in the first months after the change, it still leaves the British Airways Club as a frustratingly unattractive option for frequent flyers.

The promised bonuses are as follows:

  • Short haul flights:
    • 50 Tier Points for Euro Traveller (excl. Basic Economy)
    • 100 Tier Points for Club Europe
  • Long haul flights:
    • 70 Tier Points for World Traveller (Economy)
    • 140 Tier Points for World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy)
    • 210 Tier Points for Club World (Business Class)
    • 330 Tier Points for First Class

While they will be added on top of your usual earnings, the value of these tier points isn’t too high – given the recent devaluation. To gain a status within the new system, you need to collect the following number of Tier Points:

  • Bronze (Oneworld Ruby): 3,500 Tier Points
  • Silver (Oneworld Sapphire): 7,500 Tier Points
  • Gold (Oneworld Emerald): 20,000 Tier Points

Also, the bonus does not apply to existing bookings, only for new bookings made after registration.

Terms & Conditions

  • Registration period: Until February 14, 2025
  • Booking period: Until February 14, 2025, after registration
  • Travel period: Starts April 1, 2025
  • Only valid for flights with a BA flight number – eligible parter airlines are: Aer Lingus, Air Nostrum for Iberia, airBaltic, Aitlink, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Southern Airlines, Emerald Airlines For Aer Lingus, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Iberia For Level Spain For Iberia, IndiGo, Japan Airlines, jetBlue, Kenya Airways, LATAM Airlines Group, Loganair, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Vueling
  • Exclusions:
    • British Airways flights marketed by a partner (with an AA, AY, IB etc. flight number)
    • Economy Basic tickets
    • British Airways Holidays bookings
    • Award tickets

Example Routing

To look at possible earnings, we have a look at a business class ticket from Budapest to Los Angeles and back, with stops in London and New York along the way. A flight like this usually comes with the price-tag of roughly €1,650 (incl. €150 in taxes) in booking class I, the cheapest business booking class.

  • Old system (expires March 31): 640 Tier Points = Instant Oneworld Sapphire
  • New System, no bonus: 1,250 Tier Points = 17% of Oneworld Sapphire
  • New System, w/ bonus: 2,290 Tier Points = 31% of Oneworld Sapphire

The flight from New York to Los Angeles needs to be booked with a BA flight number, operated by American Airlines. If you book it with a AA flight number, you won’t receive a bonus and earn just 1,870 Tier Points for the entire journey.

Bottom Line

Even with the bonus tier points, you need to take a journey that previously granted Oneworld Sapphire status thrice to reach the same tier level. This promotion is better than nothing, but it also isn’t that helpful reaching a status.

I have just contacted BA as I had signed up for the bonus tier points but did not receive them on my latest flights. They have advised that the bonus tier point offer only applies to people who joined after the 31st December 2024. So longstanding loyal members get no bonus tier points!

Sound very strange to me. BA announced that they’re going to do similar promos in the upcoming years, so it doesn’t make sense to exclude existing members.

However, the original terms did indeed suggest that. Looks like they have now corrected it, as the have added an “also” to it:

“This promotion is only open to Eligible Participants. An Eligible Participant is a British Airways Plc (“BA”) Club member. Eligible Participants who join The British Airways Club after 30 December 2024 are also eligible to register for this promotion”

So I would suggest to get back to BA with that information
