The Ship

The Costa Fascinosa (Concordia-class) was launched in 2012 and offers space for 3,800 passengers as well as approximately 1,100 crew members. It is 290 meters long and 32 meters wide. With a tonnage of 114,500, it reaches a maximum of 23 knots. The ship is equipped with “Cold Ironing,” a shore power system. This allows the engines to be turned off in ports to avoid emissions.

All Costa ships’ official onboard languages are Italian and English. The currency is the euro. The ship has 6 restaurants, with the buffet restaurant and the main restaurant (with table service) included in the price. For drinks at the 12 bars and in the specialty restaurants, you will need to pay. In the buffet restaurant, however, there are free water dispensers, and in the morning also a type of “juice” and coffee/tea.

In addition, there are, for a fee, a 4D cinema, a shopping centre, a casino, a Grand Prix simulator, a golf simulator, and a wellness area of around 6,000 square meters with a Thalassotherapy pool, various rooms for treatments, a sauna, a Turkish steam bath, and a solarium. For the little ones, there is a kids’ club divided into different age groups.

There are both outdoor pools and an indoor pool with a retractable glass roof. This is very pleasant in bad weather or in colder regions. There are also whirlpools both inside and outside.

Getting to La Romana

Sadly, a last-minute round-trip from Europe to the Dominican Republic is not at all cheap. Including luggage, you’ll have to pay at least €718 (e.g. with Iberojet from Madrid to Punta Cana), but from most cities in Europe, even more than that.

Prices from the US are far cheaper, as many low-cost carriers fly to the Dominican Republic, e.g. Spirit and Frontier. Flying Frontier to Punta Cana, for instance, starts at US$222 (~€189) from Newark or US$257 (~€219) from Nashville (plus baggage fees). Frontier also flies to Santo Domingo, e.g. from Atlanta for US$209 (~€178) (plus baggage).
