Hungary: Free Bus and Train Travel for all EU Citizens Aged 65 and Above

We recently introduced an offer for Slovakia where students under 26 years of age and individuals aged 62 and above can travel nationwide by train for free. Today, we’d like to draw your attention to a similar offer in Hungary. In Hungary, all EU citizens aged 65 and above can use buses and trains for free.

Unlike in Slovakia, there’s no need to register at a ticket counter for this offer in Hungary. All that’s required is the purchase of supplements or seat reservations for the desired connection unless it’s local trains.

Conditions

  • Travelling by buses, trams, and subways is generally free. When ticket inspectors check, you only need to show your ID or passport to prove your age and eligibility.
  • Local trains can also be used without restrictions.
  • For IC (InterCity) trains, a seat reservation (around €1 to €2) is required.
  • A surcharge is applicable for travelling in first class or the comfort class of second class.
  • Fast trains can be used with an additional fee of around €1.

It’s important to note that this offer is only valid for journeys within Hungary. Cross-border trips, such as to or from Austria, are not covered.

Ticket Booking

You can book online on this website for tickets with supplements or necessary seat reservations. Below, we’ll show you how to easily book them.

On the homepage, click on the Detailed search link:

On the next page, enter your desired route (in this example, Budapest – Debrecen) and the travel date. Also, make sure to activate the I only need seat reservation option at the bottom:

Then, you can start the search for connections. On the next page, you’ll need to select that you are at least 65 years old. Click on Edit and add passengers in the upper right corner to do this. In the pop-up that appears, select the appropriate choice and check the box next to EU or EEC citizen (free of charge).

After clicking on Accept, you will see the available connections and only the seat reservation fee will be charged:

Click on the blue button with the price to proceed with the booking process.

Conclusion

Hungary offers not only its own citizens but also all EU citizens aged 65 and above a very attractive offer with the free use of public transportation. The implementation is incredibly simple since no prior registration is required to take advantage of the free rides. Just showing your ID or passport during a check is sufficient.
