Oneworld members British Airways and Qatar Airways are currently offering one-way tickets from Africa to Europe at attractive prices. Business class flights from Ethiopia and Tanzania start at US$693 (~€591)
The flights each include two layovers: one in Doha and one in London. There are also connections available where the long-haul segment is operated by Qatar Airways in the QSuite. Additionally, access to the Al Mourjan Business Class Lounge is available in Doha.
When you check the BA website, it shows even lower prices. However, after clicking on it, the price rises to at least US$693 (~€591). It becomes slightly cheaper through third-party providers if you purchase a BA short-haul flight in economy class.
The following prices can be obtained when booking directly through British Airways (all business class):
- Addis Ababa, Ethiopia → Basel at US$693 (~€591)
- Addis Ababa, Ethiopia → Düsseldorf at US$693 (~€591)
- Addis Ababa, Ethiopia → Paris at US$701 (~€598)
- Kilimanjaro, Tanzania → Basel at US$790 (~€674)
- Dar es Salaam, Tanzania → Basel at US$797 (~€680)
- Zanzibar, Tanzania → Hamburg at US$938 (~€800)
- Kilimanjaro, Tanzania → Vienna at US$963 (~€821)

The segment from Africa to Doha is always operated by Qatar Airways. Various aircraft (Boeing 777, Boeing 787, Airbus A320, etc.) are used. All offer lie-flat seats, while the QSuite is only available from Addis Ababa.
From Doha to London, you will fly with either Qatar Airways or British Airways. We recommend the Qatar QSuite, which is primarily available on the Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 (but not on the A380). However, British Airways’ Club Suite is also a good option.
The second layover takes place in London Heathrow. Then, there is just a short connecting flight in British Airways’ short-haul business class (economy seats with the middle seat left free).
Flights from London to Stuttgart (and Vienna) often depart from Terminal 3. The lounge selection there is significantly better than in Terminal 5, from which most BA flights operate.
Entry into Ethiopia: An e-visa is required for $62 (~€57). Please note the travel warning for certain areas. The Foreign Office also advises against all travel to Ethiopia, except for the capital, Addis Ababa.
Entry into Tanzania: An e-visa for Tanzania costs $50 (~€46). For entry into Zanzibar, an additional $44 (~€41) is required for mandatory insurance.
Search & Book
Unfortunately, we could not find the exact fare rules. Therefore, we cannot say how long the deal will still be available. Departures are available from April 2025 until January 2026.
Searching for dates is somewhat more challenging. Google Flights shows some connections, but not all of them are actually bookable. It’s best to search directly on the British Airways website. However, that is not entirely smooth either:
- BA wildly mixes prices for economy and business class in the fare calendar.
- With departures from Ethiopia, the BA website often displays much lower prices. Only after selecting a connection does the correct price appear below.
If you book with Qatar Airways, the same tickets cost more than double
Why is booking with an airline better than with an online travel agency?
More often than not, online travel agencies offer lower fares than airlines do. We still recommend booking with the airlines directly. There are two main reasons for that:
Better Customer Service
In case any problems like delays, cancellations or missed connections arise, you can communicate directly with the airline. The airline has to take care of you because you have a contract with them.
If a travel agency issues your ticket, you may have to reach out to them first. You also depend on your OTA to forward information like flight changes instead of receiving them directly from the airline. In many cases, you may get a prime exhibition of responsibility shifting rather than problem-solving.
This especially applies to premium tickets. You don’t want to spend more than €1,000 to wind up with some budget OTA’s telephone hotline in case anything goes wrong.
Baggage and Other Fees
Economy fares not including hold luggage are industry standard by now. In most cases, travel agencies charge much higher baggage fees than the airlines themselves. If bags are not included in your fare, airlines are often the cheaper alternative.
This also applies to other things like food services, insurances or priority treatment. In almost all cases, you pay less for additional amenities when booking on the airlines’ website.
