Madeira: €85 TAP Flights from Luxembourg, €40 Nonstop from Lisbon or Porto (Cabin Bags Only, Stopovers Possible)

Madeira Funchal Teleferico

Star Alliance member TAP Portugal has an interesting offer going for flights to Funchal, Madeira in late 2023 and early 2024. Prices for round trips from Luxembourg start at €85 with a layover in Lisbon. The fare rules allow you to add up to five days in the Portuguese capital without increasing the flight cost – when booking via TAP’s website. A checked bag increases the price by €10 each way on TAP’s website.

Luxembourg is by far the cheapest origin in Western Europe, the next best are flights from Paris-Orly for €113. If you want to fly nonstop from the Portuguese mainland, roundtrip prices go as low as €47 from Porto and €40 from Lisbon w/o a checked bag.

Our availability calendar highlights all possible flight dates at the lowest price for trips up to 28 days. It will forward you to TAP with your selected flight dates – it’s the best option when travelling with checked bags and wanting to add a stopover in Lisbon. You can also check what OTAs have to offer, as they sell these tickets up to €20 cheaper.

Travel with a short stop in Lisbon or extend your stay on TAP’s website.

If you’re willing to pay a little more, flights from e.g. Amsterdam, London, Frankfurt, Dublin, Geneva, Paris, Lyon, Madrid, or Zurich are available between €120 and €150. However, in most cases you will find nonstop flights for similar prices.

On most flights, you can expect TAP Airbus A320 family aircraft, featuring the usual 3-3 seating pattern and narrow 71cm seat pitch.

Search & Book

The fare rules don’t offer any restrictions like a travel or sales period. A minimum stay of five days is necessary to get the lowest fare. According to Google Flights (instructions), flights from Luxembourg are primarily available in early 2025. You can find much better availability from Paris and almost daily departures at the lowest fare from Lisbon or Porto.

We recommend looking for suiting flight dates with our calendar above and proceeding to directly, even though Skyscanner offers cheaper tickets.

Why is booking with an airline better than with an online travel agency?

More often than not, online travel agencies offer lower fares than airlines do. We still recommend booking with the airlines directly. There are two main reasons for that:

Better Customer Service
In case any problems like delays, cancellations or missed connections arise, you can communicate directly with the airline. The airline has to take care of you because you have a contract with them.

If a travel agency issues your ticket, you may have to reach out to them first. You also depend on your OTA to forward information like flight changes instead of receiving them directly from the airline. In many cases, you may get a prime exhibition of responsibility shifting rather than problem-solving.

This especially applies to premium tickets. You don’t want to spend more than €1,000 to wind up with some budget OTA’s telephone hotline in case anything goes wrong.

Baggage and Other Fees
Economy fares not including hold luggage are industry standard by now. In most cases, travel agencies charge much higher baggage fees than the airlines themselves. If bags are not included in your fare, airlines are often the cheaper alternative.

This also applies to other things like food services, insurances or priority treatment. In almost all cases, you pay less for additional amenities when booking on the airlines’ website.

The tickets are issued in booking class O, meaning that a Luxembourg – Madeira roundtrip should roughly get you:

  • 500 Award Miles + 80 Points on Miles&More
  • 332 Miles on Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
  • 332 Award Miles on Emirates Skywards
  • 332 Miles on Air Canada Aeroplan

Information & Tips for Madeira

The island of Madeira is a autonomous region of Portugal. It is located roughly 1,000 kilometers off the coast of Portugal and 400 km north of the Canary Islands. The island’s capital Funchal is famous for its steep hills and streets, while the island is best known for the fortified wine namend after it. Madeira is a popular tourist destination thanks to its beautiful, volcanic landscapes and whale watching opportunities.

Best Time to Travel

Similiar to the Canary Islands, Madeira enjoys a mild climate all year round. Average temperatures never climb above 25 degrees or fall below 15 degrees. While November through February is more rainy than other times of the year, precipation is still much lower than on mainland Europe. If you want to go swimming, water temperatures are highest from May to September.

From the Airport to the City

Madeira’s Cristiano Ronaldo Int’l Airport is located in Funchal and served by a huge number of leisure airlines from all over Europe. An hourly bus service connects the airport to the city of Funchal, charging €8 for a roundtrip. A taxi will take 20-30 minutes and charge you around €20. Of course, there are several rental car offices at the airport.
