The so-called Island Hopper from Star Alliance member United Airlines is one of the most interesting flights in the world. It starts in Hawaii and stops at up to four Pacific islands before reaching its destination in Guam. You can currently book the entire trip one way with departure from Honolulu to Osaka, Tokyo and Nagoya, starting at just €247 (~US$284).
All itineraries start in Honolulu, but you can reach three different cities in Japan with this fare:
- Honolulu → Tokyo at €247 (with or w/o overnight layover in Guam)
- Honolulu → Osaka at €247 (with overnight layover in Guam)
- Honolulu → Nagoya at €247 (with overnight layover in Guam)

If you just want to get from Hawaii to Japan, you can simply pick United’s non-stop service, which is available for the same price on most of the dates. Star Alliance partner ANA operates flights between Hawaii and Tokyo with its Airbus A380.
However, this deal is about stopping as often as possible, not about convenience. All flights are operated by United’s Guam based Pacific fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft, with a 3-3 seating and rather narrow 76cm seat pitch. If you want the full experience, search specifically for flights stopping Kwajalein (KWA). UA154, which stops on all islands between Hawaii and Guam, is excluded in the fare rules. UA132 always skips Kosrae (KSW) and Kwajalein occasionally.
Most Europeans need an electronic system for travel authorization (ESTA) to enter the USA for up to 90 days. This costs US$40 (~€35) and you should apply for it a couple of days before your trip, at the latest.
There are some cases where you cannot apply for an ESTA, e.g. if you’ve been to Cuba since 2021 or to Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, or North Korea since March 2011. In those cases, you’ll need to get a visa from a US embassy or consulate, which can take multiple weeks.
Most European passport holders can spend up to 90 days in Japan visa-free.

There are two ways to search for fitting flight dates. Google Flights gives you a quick overview when flight dates at the lowest fare are available in general. You can also use the ITA Matrix to search more specifically for flights. As mentioned previously, UA154 stops at all islands, but is also vastly more expensive (€500+). Searching for flight UA132 results in more dates at the lowest price. You have to enter the routing codes manually.

Here are some impressions from Peer’s trip in 2023. We strongly recommend reserving a window seat for US$37 (~€32) for the flight from Hawaii to Guam to get the most out of your experience. Guam, a U.S. territory in the western Pacific, is known for its beaches, WWII historical sites, and Chamorro culture.
