Now that the merger of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian has been completed, the cooperation is becoming more and more visible for passengers. Not only is Alaska Airlines now using Hawaiian’s planes to operate their very first long-haul routes, but you can also transfer miles from both airlines’ programs at a 1:1 rate. Now another development has come up thanks to the merger: You can now redeem Mileage Plan miles for Hawaiian flights. And while many prices are mediocre at best, there are some quite acceptable redemption options.
Flights Within Hawaii for 3,500 miles + $6 o/w
If you wish to hop from one Hawaiian island to another, using your Mileage Plan miles is not a bad idea. Currently, the flights cost as little as 3,500 miles + US$6 (~€5).

The price even includes luggage. As you can see in the screenshot, you also have the option of paying 15,000 miles + US$6 (~€5) to fly in first class. But who needs first class on a 40-minute flight?
Business Class from Hawaii to Sydney for 65,000 miles + $26 o/w
While short economy class flights may be a good way to save a bit of money using very few miles, you can save big amounts of money by flying long-haul business class. Probably the best option is flying from Honolulu to Sydney. The 10 hours in business class merely cost 65,000 miles + US$26 (~€22)!

To put this into perspective: Flying business class to Sydney from the mainland US, with other partner airlines, usually costs around 210,000 miles in each direction.
Business Class from Hawaii to Japan for 130,000 miles + $6 o/w
Another interesting route is Hawaiian’s flight from Honolulu to Japan. You could spend the 10-hour flight in business class. With miles, you’d be paying 130,000 miles + US$6 (~€5). Hawaiian flies to Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka.

Paying 35,000 miles + US$6 (~€5) is also an acceptable option, especially as it includes luggage and is refundable.
Flights to Polynesia
These are not as attractive as the previously mentioned routes, as the flights are neither particularly long nor the prices particularly low. But it’s still worth mentioning, that Hawaiian flies to Tahiti, Rarotonga, and Pago Pago, and that prices for those non-stop flights start at 25,000 miles in economy class and 95,000 miles in business class.

Mainland US – Hawaii is not attractive
Many people probably think of flying from the American mainland to Hawaii when they think of flying with Hawaiian Airlines. This, however, is not a good use for your Mileage Plan miles. The price of 40,000 miles for spending 5 hours in First Class is not a good use of the miles, and if you fly economy class, flying on Alaska Airlines is cheaper than on Hawaiian.

Conclusion
While this may not be huge news, Alaska members from Hawaii can definitely benefit from this development. And some others may too. Why not spend a couple of days in beautiful Hawaii before flying business class to Sydney? Or why not spend your miles to explore various Hawaiian islands when you’re there?
