Flights from Europe to “The Land Down Under” are typically among the most expensive ones. Flight times of 16 hours and more just don’t come cheap. Luckily, there is the occasional exception. Thai Airways is selling tickets for round trips from Stockholm to three different cities in Australia for prices starting at SEK 6,600/€622.
Availability is already limited. But you will be able to find some connections starting from August until the end of the year.

All connections will bring you to the Star Alliance member’s hub in Bangkok before continuing to your destination in Australia. The layover’s are usually rather short. Besides, Thai Airways has been rated one of the world’s top airlines over the past years. So there really is no catch with this offer.
Search & Book
According to the fare rules we found, tickets for these flights will be sold until July 18th. That is if there are still cheap seats left. The promoted travel period starts on July 19th and ends December 13th, 2019. There are minimum stay requirements of 3 days – which seem to be somewhat irrelevant for trips to the other end of the world. If you have enough time on your hands, you can spend one month in Australia before returning to Europe.
As we already mentioned, there is only limited availability for this sweet offer. So the time stated in the fare rules is more a technical piece of information. We found absolutely no connections in July and few in August. You can use Google Flights (instructions) to find flight dates that are cheap and would work for you. Since we’ve experienced some issues with Google displaying the Thai routes, we recommend you use the ITA Airfare Search.
Once you found the right connection you can book either directly on the carrier’s website – which will end in around €50 extra – or just try Skyscanner to compare the prices that OTAs offer.
All tickets will be issued in booking class W. Not many Star Alliance programs will credit you with miles at all. United MileagePlus, TAP Portugal, Miles & More and Thai’s Royal Orchid Plus are basically the only ones that will fill your mileage account.
Information & Tips for Australia
Australia is known for natural wonders like the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru, and the beaches of Sydney, along with vibrant cities like Melbourne and Sydney. The local currency is the Australian dollar (AUD), and credit cards are widely accepted. The price level can be high, especially in major cities, but there are budget options available for food and accommodation. The weather varies by region—tropical in the north, temperate in the south, with hot summers and mild winters. The best times to visit are typically during spring and autumn for mild temperatures.
Australia’s transport infrastructure is generally good, with well-developed road networks, public transit systems, and domestic flights. In major cities, public transport options like buses, trams, and trains are widely available, though some areas may require a car for convenience. Between cities, domestic flights are common and fast, but bus and train travel can be slow and less frequent for long distances. Driving is a popular option for exploring regions outside cities, with roads in good condition but long travel times due to the country’s vast size.
