Nothing is more annoying than starting your vacation with an hour’s wait at security. Often there is a fast lane for frequent flyers and business class passengers, but that doesn’t help everyone else.
In the meantime, however, several airports in the world are offering a service that should make queues a thing of the past. Where you can benefit from it – and whether the whole thing works as promised – that’s what this short article is about.
These Airports Offer Free Security Slots
Such systems are not new and were first tested at Frankfurt Airport in 2018. The following airports in Europe now offer the option of reserving a spot at the security checkpoint free of charge:
- Amsterdam: AMS Whyline
- Berlin: BER Runway
- Cologne/Bonn: CGN Gateway
- Düsseldorf: DUS Gateway
- Frankfurt: FRA Smartway
- Hamburg: Slot & Fly
- Hanover: HAJway
- Rome-Fiumicino: FCO Q-Pass
Such a service is also offered at other airports worldwide:
USA:
- Los Angeles (Terminal 7 & 8)
- Miami
- New York JFK (T4)
- New York EWR
- Orlando
- Phoenix
- Seattle

The list is probably not final. So if an airport is missing from the list, please leave a comment.
Our Experience in Berlin
At Berlin Airport, it is called BER Runway and can be easily booked via ber.whyline.com. There you must first select a flight, enter the number of people and select a time up to 1:10 before departure:

On-site, you then have ±10 minutes to make your reservation for the booked time. During our visit, it was also not a problem to book a slot straight away. It wasn’t busy anyway.
After booking, you simply have to follow the signs pointing to BER Runway at the security checkpoint and show the QR code to the employee.
