The Best eSIM Plans for Morocco 🇲🇦 Compared

Casablanca Marokko Tag

Even though Morocco is only separated from the European mainland by the Strait of Gibraltar, the popular vacation destination belongs to North Africa. It is not part of the EU roaming zone. If you want to continue surfing the internet with your smartphone while on vacation in Agadir, Casablanca, Fes, or Marrakech, looking for an alternative before your trip is best. Roaming with your mobile contract is usually very expensive.

A good alternative here is a digital eSIM with a suitable prepaid plan. You can set it up on your smartphone before departure and start surfing immediately after landing.

What is an eSIM, and is my smartphone compatible?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card that can be loaded directly onto a compatible device without the need for a physical SIM card. This type of SIM card is particularly convenient for travellers because it is easy and quick to buy and activate online without having to worry about a physical SIM card.

You will find numerous providers of eSIM plans on the Internet. With most of them, you buy a one-off prepaid plan for a certain number of days and data volume. After expiry, there are no further costs and you do not need a subscription.

Unfortunately, not all smartphones support an eSIM. You have good odds with an iPhone 11 / 12 / 13, but also with an Android smartphone, e.g. Google Pixel 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 or Samsung Galaxy S20, S21, or Note 20. You can find a list of smartphones that support eSIM here: Which devices support an eSIM?

If your Android smartphone does not support eSIM profiles, eSIM.me is a physical SIM card that you can use with eSIM profiles.

Most eSIM providers only offer data volume and no free minutes. Since these are also prepaid plans, outgoing calls are generally not supported. With some smartphones, e.g. iPhones, you can still be reached via your normal SIM card and make calls.

Cheapest Providers

As is often the case in our eSIM comparison, Airalo offers the best value for money. Unfortunately, there is only one plan available with 1 GB for 7 days. If that is not sufficient or if you plan to stay longer, you can reload the eSIM with the same conditions.

Slightly more expensive, RedteaGO offers a plan with 1, 3, or 5 GB for 30 days each. This is worthwhile for low consumption and stays of more than seven days.

Pay as You Go

Also interesting in terms of pricing is the eSIM with usage-based billing from MTX Connect. You have to buy the eSIM once for €10, but you immediately receive €10 credit. Afterwards, you pay 1.2 euro cents per MB in many countries worldwide, which equals €12 per GB.

Buy a Local SIM Card

Cheaper than an eSIM but less convenient is buying a traditional SIM card locally. In that case, it’s best to visit a Maroc Telecom store and have the prepaid card registered and activated on-site. For example, a data SIM card costs MAD 59 (~€5) with 4 GB for 10 days.

The Best Network in Morocco

Morocco has three major network operators: Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, and Inwi. The market leader, Maroc Telecom, offers the best network coverage. In the major cities and tourist areas, Orange and Inwi also provide sufficient network coverage. If you find yourself in a rural area, it is recommended to choose an eSIM that allows you to use the Telecom network.
