Lufthansa Starts Offering Pre-Order Meals for Business Class Guests

Lufthansa Allegris Business Class 1

Over the past few months, airlines catching up to their competition usually meant getting rid of checked bags on premium tickets or devaluing their miles and points. So it’s even better to see an international heavyweight following up on a positive trend: While most of the competition already allowed premium passengers to pre-order specific meals, Star Alliance founding member Lufthansa will follow suit come August.

In a press release, the airline confirmed that long-haul business class guests will be able to pre-order warm meals beginning mid-August. According to the airline, passengers will have the choice between six menus. They have to make their selection between a month and up to 24 hours before departure. In the beginning, this service is only available for flights starting from Germany.

Not only will this help reduce waste for the airline, it also prevents passengers ending up with their second or third choice because their top option was already gone. Airlines like Aeromexico, British Airways, Singapore Airlines and more are already offering their premium passengers meal choices months before departure.

While Lufthansa allowed ordering food according to specific dietary restrictions earlier (like vegetarian, vegan, halal or kosher meals) before, this will mark the first time passengers can order specific dishes before boarding a plane of Germany’s largest airline.

This announcement fits well into Lufthansa’s efforts to overhaul their dated long-haul business class product after presenting their new Allegris cabin earlier this year. While the main focus is the option to pre-order specific meals, the press release also mentions a wider selection of drinks for European business class passengers alongside more entertainment options on your personal devices.
