EgyptAir Changes Requalification Requirements for Gold Card

We’ve already promoted EgyptAir Plus – the loyalty program run by Egypt’s national carrier – as one of the easier ways to obtain Star Alliance Gold status. Now the airline has announced that it will make changes to its program. While several things will work differently in the future, the one point that could affect you most is the adjustment made to the Gold card level.

Good news first: none of this will affect people trying to obtain a Gold card for the first time. You will still need as little as 60,000 miles to qualify. But if you’re already the holding elite status and want to extend it, 30,000 miles or 32 segments won’t be enough anymore to keep Star Alliance Gold for another two years.

The new requirements read as follows:

In order to maintain the Gold Tier, you are required to earn 40,000 Tier miles or 36 sectors within two years from the date of the Upgrade/Renewal of Gold membership level.

Obviously, EgyptAir raised the bar by 10,000 miles respectiveley 4 flight segments. So it’s not impossible to hold your Gold status in the future. But also not as convenient as it used to be.

Bottom Line

Overall, EgyptAir Plus remains a great program within the Star Alliance. If only for the possibility to obtain status by earning tier miles together with your family. A requalification period of two years is also more than fair. So while we never like to see adjustments to loyalty programs that make it harder for us to maintain status, we can still recommend EgyptAir Plus to all our readers.
